Good Mufflers

Im planning on getting an exhaust made, so I have 2 questions. I plan on starting with a quality muffler, in which I would ask yalls for your opinion on whats good. Second, what size piping could I pull off without losing much power or torque? I heard there was a 2.36 or something somewhere, and just thought maybe that could work here with the Eco.

I would go with a Magnaflow NON-fart can muffler like Cody's for more of a "show", it's got good performance and looks good but it's kinda pricey, or you could go with a Dynomax super turbo muffler for relatively cheap and good performance as well, you'll have to throw a muffler tip on it tho if you want it to look pretty.

Only $92?!? damm I thought they were supposed to be alot more expensive than that, but now with that said Ill definatly check that out tommarow and see how much it would cost to get an exhaust made.

yeah for just mufflers its more on the cheaper side, it gets expensive when you start getting all the pipes bent and what not.

Hmm more than $500?for example http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopdisplayproducts.asp?SID=4Chevrolet&zone=American&id=131&cat=Cavalier
a single setup from magnaflow is almost $800. but thats from them. im sure it will be cheaper from a local company. my exhaust was $475 for dual exhaust with 2 ractive mufflers.

Yeah i was considering getting just the pre-mde magna flow since i found it for around 550, but thought it would be cheaper just to get one made witha magnaflow muffler. Oh yeah, any recomendations on resonator size?
my99cavy
07-30-2006, 04:16 PM
well if you found one for $550 then i would prob just go with that. umm about the resonator thats a good question. i didnt have one put on when i got my exhaust.
notaricajustfasta
07-30-2006, 04:30 PM
i would say for a resonator go maybe an inch or two bigger than the piping. it will give you better flow and a nice sound im sure. you always could get high flow cat or just straight pipes depending if its legal or not
my99cavy
07-30-2006, 05:09 PM
if you want to go the high flow cat route....

Well if were throwing pricing out there, this is what I have done so far for you guys to get an idea...
2- Maganflow mufflers - $198.90 ( after tax from Cardomain.com since they are NY based and i live in the same state.)
1- Magnaflow Hi-flo Cat- $78.20( Summit racing)
1- Pacesetter Armor Coated 4-1 Header- $220.00 ( Turbotech racing GP on JBO)
RDFABS custom exhaust install with T-304 Stainless steel 2.5" tubing primary and 2" y- after trailing arm for duals- $250 ( my cost) normal install exhaust price is $400.
NGK Primary and secondary O2 sensors $140 ( after my discount at my job at advance auto parts)
$887.10
This is for brand new everything from header back. Normal Cole mufflers, Midas, and other shops don't deal with Stainless steel tubing. Just giving you guys a heads up on that one. But i have parting this setup together for over a year now.

Haha ok, so lets see. Imma try that pricing thing.
1 magnaflow muffler - $100
1 magnaflow hi flo cat - $80
1 random guess at install costs - $400
Which is 580, and im guessing i need those o2 sensors which add another 140, makin it 720. imma get a quote on tuesday from a local muffler shop that my friend had make his 60-somthin camaros exhaust. Soo i kno they use SS, and im guessing that 400 install charge covers the resonator and whatnot also? Hopefully it does and god doesnt hate me.

You don't have to replace your O2 sensors if you don't need to man. I only chose to do this since for some reason my car has been running rich. My gas milage sucks and since they are 8yrs old, i figured it wouldn't hurt. Could also be the 11 month old gas Plus Stabil i have in the tank still i am trying to burn off...ha ha. But also last year the gas milage was pretty bad aswell.

My previous exhaust on the 2.2 ran me almost a grand,
Injen intake from ebay $210 w/o shipping
Rksport dual magnaflow catback, $460 w/o shipping
Magnaflow high flow direct fit catalytic converter $100 off ebay free shipping
Pace setter ceramic coated 4-1 header $260 w/o shipping
Top O2 sensor around $20
Lower O2 sensor around $90
So over $1,130
....oh my god
plus $500 for the lambo doors
around $220 to fix the brake lines
around $70 for the euro tailights
around $70 for the steering wheel and quick release hub i never used
around $50 for the clear blinker lights, and lower blinker lights
around $50 for the big "shopping cart" wing I eventually took off
around $30 for all the engine wire loom
(and the $700 Viper alarm system, $500 for the Konig rims and toyo tires, lol $14 for the 13" euro antenna, and the clear headlight corners all of which I re-used)
and now I'm taking everything off, still buying shit for it, like a plain stock muffler and putting all the stock piping back on with stock header, and going all the way back to stock so I can sell it and part it out.
wow.....WHAT A F*CKING WASTE THAT WAS!!!

Tis whY i got the mufflers i did. The look like your average muffler shape, but the 4" tip and mirror SS finish shows some bling. There seemed to be enough sound deadening material in them, i decided to not go with a resonator... I just hope i decided right. I'll throw up a sound clip for you all prolly saturday night or sunday after the install.

Yeah, $3,344 on top of the $1800 I paid for the car, so all in all, more or less, I paid over $5,000, to drive it for a year, have the new exhaust leak at pretty much every clamp from the cat converter back, with no resonator so it sounded like complete shit, get sick of the car, realize how much potential it doesnt have for performance unless i drop a turbo in it, and then to have it sit in my granfather's yard.
I would part it out online but I'm way too lazy to get shipping quotes. It's too bad too, I could make a pretty penny. Lambo door hinges, Rksport dual magnaflow exhaust, magnaflow high flow cat, pace setter ceramic coated header and none of the exhaust parts were on longer then 6months, altezza taillights, clear lower blinker lights, Injen intake for the 2.2, Nology spark plugs that were never installed, Kyb Agx shocks/struts, Eibach prokit lowering springs also weren't installed for longer then 6months...Idk if I would sell the suspension parts and intake tho since I no longer have the stock parts or stock intake box...unless I got a good enough offer so I could go buy the stock parts from a junkyard or something and still make some money.

Hmm alright, I got it quoted today...
2.25 non-ss piping, resonator, magnaflow hi flo cat to build would come to around 350. Plus the muffler im ordering would bring it to about 450. I woulda done ss pipes, but they would have had to order them and it wouldve added alot to the price. And I dont want to spend to much on something I might change later on if I ever get a better job and save enough for a turbo.

probably a good idea but you should of went with 2.5 piping
Lances133

I'm personally gonna go with 2.25" piping when i do an exhaust, I lost power with 2.5"...then again it was dual exhaust, without a resonator and 2.5" piping on a 2.2

it's not hard to loosw power with a 2.2
MrR0b0t0
08-01-2006, 05:13 PM
Haha yeah I heard you would lose power with anything bigger, and I dont have enough power yet to actually be able to take advantage of it. The only way I could actually see the bigger tubing helping is if I put a turbo on it. Which, like I said, is a long way away.

if money is tight start with a catback or just get a universal muff and have it welded on till you can afford to get the catback... then get your high flow cat, then the header....what i did was muff, high flow cat, changed out the muff to a better one and had 2 1/4 inch piping welded on from the manafold back, keeping the high flow cat of coarse, then got my header..
