so my 1964 beetle won't run. It turns over, even fires a little bit. it just won't keep running. i've tried fixing the timing, i changed the ignition coil, spark plugs, and fuel pump. i have no idea what to do. i suspect that there is a problem witht the carbeuraters. i don't know how to adjust those. any ideas what might be wrong, and how can i learn about carbeuraters?

Have you checked for some sort of blockage in the fuel line? I've seen this problem before. Blow out fuel line and I'd change the fuel filter to start with.....

look into the carb and push the accelerator and see if there is a constant stream of gas. Th car doesnt need to be on for that. if there is a stream then check your electrical.

Hi:

My first question is "how long since the car last ran well?"

It sounds like you have fuel and spark and since the car tries to run although rough would indicate that you have some compression. I have a suggestion: Check the ignition contact points for gap setting as the tend to close over time due to rubbing block wear. Remove the cap and turn the engine by hand until the contact rubbing block is on the high point of the distributer lobe. The gap should be that of a well worn dime. If the gap is too little, the car will run rough especially if the distributer shaft is worn or loose.

I have found that a good basic book on these cars will save much grief over time.

If I can be of further assistance please contact me.

Good luck.
