Has Anyone Changed A Clutch?

I have been having the worst project of my life on this Rodeo.
93, 4X4, 5sp, 3.2L
OK here is my dillema, ive pulled the tranny and put it back in twice and have to go for a round three now. The first 2 times the slave cyl. wouldnt extend far enough to push the fork it seemed, so i bought a new slave cyl.
After that I was bleeding the system, things were going well, had pressure about half way when i heard *snap* broke the fingers off the throwout bearing (so i think from looking into the inspection holes)
It just seems like something is not right when putting the clutch in. My help has both changed clutches before and one has worked for Greyhound for years. I don't see how i could have put something in wrong, especially since everything is marked.
Any type of help would be great, a diagram or detailed description would be spectacular. This thing has been down for almost a month between ordering parts and just not wanting to work on it some days after work.
This is a plead, please help or try to give hints where i can find the right info because I am at a loss. It just seems like there is nothing to push the fork into the correct position and the throwout bearing is going the wrong way? I just don't understand how we could have made a mistake putting it in twice.

Just for future reference if anyone else goes to change a clutch themselves, don't buy the Hayne's book. It is garbage and tells you nothing. Ended up going to an Isuzu dealer and talking to the mechanic who told me how to put it on. Pull clutch. Real easy to do once you find out what to do, throwout bearing just snaps into the pressure plate. I hear Chilton's book has better diagrams and directions. Wish they still made those big books like they used to.

Seems the clutch on these puppies lasts a long time. May be why you never got a response, some of us higher mileage members on this board drive the auto's and they're original as well - (excuse me while I go knock HARD on wood).
So is it up and running?

Seems the clutch on these puppies lasts a long time.I'd have to agree... my Rodeo has 157,000 miles on the original. :grinyes:

Mine only lasted 88k miles under previous owners. But the guy I bought it from (buys repos then sells them after fixing anything wrong) had put a new one in the week before I bought it so I have no experience with clutches in rodeos (and hopefully never will).
BTW, he also changed the t-belt, tensioner, and water pump :)

Gizmo - I think it really depends on the driver, i.e. clutch rider, etc. as well as overall durability.
Our '85 Toyota p/up has gone thru 3 headgaskets and 1 engine in almost 300K miles, but the clutch is original.

3 out of 4 of mine are, Rodeo's been paid off for almost 3yrs now, '01 Dodge diesel was paid off 2 years ago, 3yrs early when we refinanced the house, and the '85 Toyota p/up we paid cash for 15yrs ago.
The new Xterra obviously holds a loan, but we're working on a situation with my sister and her hubby, they're interested in buying it as they've just recently sold their problematic Chevy. Love the Xterra, but with rising gas prices, I'm a bit leary of having 2 SUV's around, especially one that holds a note for 5yrs that may not be worth half that in 3yrs due to gas prices.
The Toyota is on it's last summer with us as a daily driver, we'll keep it around as a back up for sure, but at 300k miles it's just not 100% reliable as a daily grinder anymore, and I can't justify the $800-1k dollar repair bills that we're getting very frequently. To defend it's honor though, we do put on about 300-500 miles per day, so it gets a workout.
We're looking at a $12k dollar 2005 Corolla 5-speed with 10k miles on the OD, which is a LOT cheaper then the Xterra we currently have. I would not have chosen this route, I don't want to choose this route - I love the Xterra, but I can't see spending roughly $500 in gas between the 2 SUV's when truly we can get buy with just the Rodeo.
And honestly, I'm leary of gas prices rising to >$4/gallon, and if I keep 2 SUV daily drivers, I can forget EVER taking the boat out in the summer, which by the way, uses 91 octane :banghead: and my diesel's gas is sitting at $3.20/gallon already.
The Rodeo averages $200/month now for gas, but will climb to $300-400/month with rising gas prices, and it is going to take the place of the Toyota p/up and be driven much more often, only it doesn't get as good as mileage. That p/up was averaging about 30-35 mpg highway, which it does a lot of, whereas the Rodeo only averages 23-24mpg highway, if I'm lucky.
BTW - my driver's headlight has been out for a month, with G-ma passing on and everything, just haven't gotten to replacing it yet - foglights however have actually impeded my replacing it, as I can see just fine without it.

Yea, it's all up and running now, mine has about 150K on it. The guy I talked to from the Isuzu dealership said when the slave cyl. starts to go it will eat the clutch in no time, which is what i figured happened.
BTW, does anyone know if these are adjustable? I have about a half inch off the floor before it engages, sometimes hard to get it to go into gear.

Two out of 4, anyway. The wife doesn't seem to function properly unless she is making car payments. Only a couple of thousand left on the Jeep...

208k on my clutch before belt spun... Clutch still strong after pulling many trailers, once pulled 5000 lb trailer. Lots of 4 wheeling in sand also.
