Hey all (all three of ya)
I've had this 1984 J2000 (Sunbird) since new. It has over 300,000 on the car.
I recently had a new/rebuilt engine installed, new paint and top.
Recently it has been quiting on me. Running down the highway at 65 mph for 15 to 20 munutes and it will just die. It will start back up, but whats going on?:banghead:
I've tuned it up, plugs, cap, rotor, injector, fuel filter, dry gas.....
What can it be?............fuel pump? distributor? something to do with the tranny?
I have had the modlator??? unplugged from the tranny for ~ 3 years with no problems. With it plugged in, the car jumps and stalls and wont move.
ANY ideas here......... car gets 30mpg and I would really like to keep driving it as my work car........
Thanks

Does it throw any codes?

Nice looking car Paul. By looking at the Pontiac nose crest (emblem) it must be garage kept.
No, no code. The check engine light only comes on after it dies. Like tonight on the way to work, it sputters, maybe a little backfire, and sometimes it dies. It ussually dies once on the way to work, and once on the way back. Once it starts up again, it ussually doenst stall again for a little while.
I'm thinking fuel pump (in the tank right) or distributor.
The only thing I can think of.......................
It was over haeting due to the fan being wired incorrectly. After they fixed this (fan now comes on at temp and shuts off automatically) it started having problems:banghead:

This is my second nose emblem - my first one went orange, then yellow, then almost clear. I got this one on ebay a few years back and just got it on.
When my fuel pump went, it took the ecm with it - I wanna say it was a code 52 or something.
We had a similiar problem with a Ford Aerostar a few years back - I do not remember what the fix was.

Do you know what the part number is for the nose emblem? I'd like to get one. Do you have a Turbo or just the Turbo hood? Mine is none turbo and I have the 13" wire wheel covers. I would like the factory wheels like yours. I think the Feiro uses the same wheels.
Anyway, I finally stalled and the check engine light came on. It cleared, but they were able to get the code.
Bad distributor. I hope.............
I'll post pictures asap.

Mine is the real deal - 84 Turbo Sunbird Convertible - 4spd. I am taking a powerball to the aluminum rims to see what happens - hopefully they will look as good as the paint. The hood is off an 89 - I always wanted the vented hood, also, the spoiler and trunk lid are off an 86. I could not find a convertible trunk lid in good shape (with the high mount stop lamp) so I went with this one.
I have all the emblems and stuff to go back on, as well as the trim and new interior.
I found the emblem on ebay by just looking at pontiac emblem as GM no longer has it - I may have the # at home, I will look for you.
There are not too many of these left in MI, so this car should really stand out when it is done.
