ok some of you might know i've been looking for a 97 gsx for about six months now.i have a bunch of questions that im going to ask all in this post.so here it goes
1.i've seen a few eclipse's(if thats a real word)out there that say they have about 350 hp,and they put around 50k just in the motor.so the question is,is this true?does it really cost that much to have 350hp at the wheels?
2.this ones kinda stupid.i've seen an eclipse on ebay that claimed to have 650awhp,but he never said how much i cost him.so lets say i have the money.about how much would it cost to have 650 hp at the wheels,(and i know enough money can buy anything, but i just want a ball park)and how much of the original drive train and trans. would have to go?
3.would a gs-t even be able to handle that much with just fwd? or should i still keep looking for a gsx?
i know i being a pain, but when you find yourself looking for a car on the net 4 or 5 house a day.it raises some questions that no one i know can answer.i might have a few more after you answer some of these.
thanks guys

1) Depending on what kind of a shopper you are, it could cost you as little as $1000 to get 350hp, or you could easily blow $5000-6000.
2) 650awhp is definitely doable, but it would probably cost you around $10k (again depends on what route you take). Remember this isn't all "name brand" shit (then it would be upwards of $15k), but half the time generic stuff outperforms name brand stuff anyways. You would probably want to get a built tranny (or have yours built up), but the rest of the stuff would last for awhile, granted you don't beat the living piss out of it all the time.
3) A gst will "handle" that much, but it won't give you as good of times as the gsx. Even with some wide ass slicks, you'll still be spinning somewhat, but either way it'd be a fast as fuck car.

1. - No, they got ripped if they have that kind of money into the car and are only pushing 350hp.
2. - Depends on if they get quality parts or cheap parts. Also, they could have gotten good deals or crappy deals.
3. - A GST will be good on the highway or for topend power. The only great advantage to AWD is better launches and more fun in the snow.
Maybe this will give you a better idea on money to power ratio. I will have about 10k worth of mods into my car when its done and I'll be around 450hp.(This will be topped out for my 18g probably.) If I end up swapping out my turbo and adjust my tuning setup then I could get a lot more power than that of course. So, if they have 25k or more invested then they had better be running some retarded power.

Brian, of that 10k, how much of those parts are quite a bit of overkill though? With the setup that you have, you could push some serious numbers if you upgraded a few of your parts from before the build. I think that if you "smartly" put 10k into a car and know exactly what you wanted to get out of it, you could push ~600hp. I know I'll be puttin out about that when I'm done, and it should be somewhere around 8-10k.

1) 50 grand should put you into the 7's or 8's. $2000 should be able to get you to 350 hp.
2) Like they said, it all depends. If they just went out and got the highest end SBR crate motor and a dogbox tranny, then have it all professionally installed, it would cost a shit ton. However, if they bought their stuff in good deals separate, put it together themselves, and did things cheaper (like making an exhaust/IC piping instead of going with rediculously overpriced GReddy stuff) you should be able to manage it for like they said, 7-10k. I personally think 650 awhp is an insane goal, start "small" and work your way up. You might get to 350-400 and think, "Damn, this is good enough." I know when I accidentally boosted 22 psi on the big 16g, that shit was hauling pretty good even for having around 400 extra lbs in the car.
3) Go AWD. 'Nuff said.

is that with or without a 6-bolt swap?and is that a new motor or a junkyard find?
thank you for all the answers.i just wanted to make sure, becuase i ran into a honduh fan today that pissed me off.he said it would take atleast 25k for an eclipse to hit 600hp,and it would take 3 or 4k for a 90 somthin honda to hit 600hp.i knew he was wrong about the honda, but he did work at a performance parts place,so i was'nt sure about the price of parts.i seem to find these kind of people when i go to import and performance parts places to ask if they knew anyone selling a eclipse.i think its just were i live tho.

Right right, I know theres a few things I should do differently. The 18g being one of the bigger things along with possibly the whole dsmlink thing. For now I'm gonna push this 18g to the max with my afc and gm maft only because I got all those parts for so cheaply. I have 600 bucks in all those parts right there. Not too bad of a deal if you ask me. Now lets compare that to the 1200 I could spend on a nice FP green turbo and like 600 towards dsmlink. Right there I would be tripling the amount I have into it. I was just getting at the whole point with you never know the good deals people could have gotten on certain parts. (People like me. :grinyes:) But yeah, I do know that my car can produce some crazy power when its all said and done. I have done overkill on certain areas. Tranny, MSD box with COP, fmic, 3" icp's, etc. But with these kind of overkills, it won't take much more upgrades to have a pretty ridiculous car for the streets. Besides, if I do it all right the first time then I wouldn't have anything to do to it in the future. lol :naughty:
BTW Garret, I added you to my MSN list but you are always away for some reason. lol :p

Mine has a built 6 bolt swapped in.
he said it would take atleast 25k for an eclipse to hit 600hp,and it would take 3 or 4k for a 90 somthin honda to hit 600hp.
I think the honda guy got it backwards there. lol

i dont know
i was cosidering a talon..................but i had one guy say it was just a ripe off of the eclipse.so i figured if one person thought that everyone would think that, and i would get laughed at
so i figured haveing the fastest eclipse in my area would shut them up.

Or you could really shut them up by having the fastest "Talon" in your area. Then we'll see who gets the last laugh. The reason I keep mine a Talon and don't convert it is because everybody knows an Eclipse when they see it. Most people don't even know what a Talon is when you tell them.
Food for thought.

true.....................but i like the way the eclipse looks a litte better
i think the fastest dsm in this area is a talon.agin he claims hes puttin down 350 to 400hp.and agin he claims he has around 20k invested in it.hes selling it for 15k,becuase i already went to look at it,but i dont think its puttin that much out.
o well the search continues :iceslolan

I think you need to quit listening to anything other people tell you about cars, or at least the people in your area. Here's my rant:
1) A 6-bolt motor is a 6-bolt motor. You could take one that's been sitting in a car for 10 years that doesn't run and make it one of the fastest DSM's out there. As long as the block itself isn't damaged, cracked, or the cylinder walls aren't gouged, it will do just fine. It might need a little TLC to get back up in tip-top shape, but where them motor comes from really doesn't make a difference.
2) It would take 25k to make a Honda with 600hp and ~$8-10k to make a DSM. The idiot who said that should be punched in the face.
3) Whoever said the talon was a rip-off eclipse should be kicked in the balls and then curb stomped. They are IDENTICAL cars (same body stamp) except for the bumpers and sideskirts, other than that every part will swap over. Who cares if people make fun of your car, as long as you like it that's all that matters. And if you're really scared about getting made fun of, then do the eclipse conversion, it's not that tough and only costs a little extra.
4) The idiot who claims to have 300-400 hp should also be kicked in the balls and then curb stomped. I bet he has a damn near stock car, and it wouldn't surprise me if his car was only a non-turbo.
Brian, when I'm on MSN or when I'm not, I just keep it at away, it's easier than signing on and off all the time. Plus if I'm on and I don't want to talk to certain people, they just think I'm "away" ;)

Get Windows Live Messenger. You can leave your status as "Offline" and still talk to people. Confuses a bunch of people, but I really like it.

Oh, see I am not a big fan of MSN. I only use it to talk to people that don't have AIM. Too bad they can't design MSN with a slightly better setup to better match AIM. Unless thats what this MSN Live Messenger is?
