Low noise heard while driving....sometimes

Subject is a 2000 V6 Alero with 85k miles. Starting yesterday afternoon every so often there is a low pitched noise, almost like a squeel heard coming from the front end while driving. The noise happens while the car is traveling down the road but it isn't a constant noise though. Only occurs for maybe 20 or 30 seconds total out of a 15 mile drive. I have noticed that if I lightly tap the brakes while the noise is present the noise gets worse. This could be brake pads getting wore down but I'm not totally convinced of that. Could it be the CV joints? Any ideas?

Thanks

CV joints normally do not make that type noise. I would say disc brake wear indicator causing the squeal but you could have wheel bearings wearing out too. Wheel bearings are part of the hub/wheel sensor assembly. The brakes are easier to work on and should be illiminated first as the possible cause.
