14b to 13g swap

Ok guys. I've been away for a while, but like everybody I've come back in need of some help. I recently swapped in a new manifold on my car and found some pretty gigantic cracks inside my turbo. So now I'm faced with a decision. I have a nice 13g sitting around that I could use, or I could buy a new turbo because I am getting boost leak and I believe the turbo is the culprit. I found the flow rate for both at 15psi to be 360 and 405 cfm. I have yet to find whether or not it will reach 300HP, so that is what I'm looking for. Will the 13g hold up to 300HP or will I need to buy a new turbo? Also, the turbo's been sitting for a while. What cleaning steps should I take before installing it? Thanks.

i wouldnt go from a 14b to a 13g i would think that would be a powerloss and i never seen a 13g over 250hp. You can find cheap 14b's that work great! save up a little and get a 16g off of e-bay for pretty cheap.

They also have different postions of the turbine inlet, and really aren't easily interchangeable IIRC. AT any rate, the 14b maxes out at 300 whp, the 13g definitely won't get there. I got my 14b that put me into the 12s for 125 bucks. It had like 125k on it, and I put another 50k on it. Just try to buy local so you can check out the shaft play and such. If your current turbo is ok other than the cracks, you can get used turbine housings for 20-40 bucks for 6cm and 7cm, repsectively. Keep in mind that all mitsu 6 and 7cm turbine housings on 5H wheels will crack. There are 3 cracks that are typical. They only hurt performance if they keep the WG flapper from closing all the way or sealing well. And even then it just hurts spool up usually, not total power (until the housing shifts and the WGF can't close at all).

Thanks for the info. Really the only reason I was wanting to swap it was because of this dang boost leak. I built a tester and the leak sounded as if it was coming from the manifold/turbo area. Like on top of the manifold right near the engine. The manifold was cracked to hell, so I swapped it and used a 4-layer gasket but the problem still exists. But it only happenssometimes when I near 5500RPMs. I'll probably just see if I can go ahead and swap to a 16g since I know I'll want to get one eventually anyways.

Sounds like an exhaust leak. Are you sure the flange on the manifold is even, mine was warped and I had the same problem

You're probably fuggen right. (Please don't flame me) But the old manifold already had some broken studs, so I got new ones and a stud remover, but two of the studs were actually broken off down in the block, and I didn't think to get a screw extractor, so I just LEFT them there thinking they'd be fine. I guess I should fix those...:shakehead :banghead:

First off, are you hijacking my thread? And second, don't buy anything from SS Autochrome. It's dirt cheap for a reason. You'll find many a thread on these guys.

So hold up, an exhaust leak will affect performance? My talon is SO incredibly slow, that it probably isnt even legal to drive. Also can exhaust air leak out through the 4 bolts that are right on top of the exhaust manifold?...because i only have three...

If your exhaust leak is right before the turbo where the manifold bolts on...I would think that affects performance quite a bit because your exhaust is what helps to spool your turbo...if you arent getting as much air flow through there it wont spin the turbine as fast so you wont get as much boost or it will spool later...I dont know how much an exhaust leak would affect you after the turbo though...

Alright well i found out today that exhaust air does leak out through the stud that has no nut on it....:shakehead
What kind of nut will suffice fo rthis missing part?

your exhaust is what makes your turbo spool
There I fixed that for you. I would just go to the hardware store and get a hardened bolt to replace it with. IIRC, its a 8mm x 1.25 bolt.

Slow Boy carries those bolts and washers and I believe DSMParts.com does too if you want the "specialized" bolts.

Oops....thanks Thor.....and I would just go down to a hardware store or something that carries a lot of bolts...I had to go to a special place in town that all they do is make bolts and they have every size, and thread you would ever need....but I would definatly suggest fixing that soon...
Oh and as far as the thread starter goes I would either just put another 14b on or just upgrade to a 16g...you can find them pretty cheap especially if thats what you are going to end up getting anyway...
