My 4-runner has 120,000 on it. The starter is dead. I know the starter is
one of the easier parts to replace. 1. Where is it? 2. Should I replace the
starter or the contacts in it? Is it something a layman should do?
Thanks

Go ahead and replace the whole starter, the bushings are probably getting worn. Take a look at the factory service manuals provided at the top of this forum ( http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=510646 ). Autozone.com may have a free repair guide available with pictures.
For future reference please provide the year and engine information. It will help in providing you with accurate, detailed information. Replacing the starter on my pick-up was straight forward, remove and replace. Took less than an hour.

Welcome to the AF!
If you have a 3rd generation 4Runner 3.4L, getting the starter out is a pita. Read the post about starter removal in the FAQ thread.
