H22A VTEC question...

This might sound like a sensless question but I'm new to the whole "VTEC" thing so please excuse me, it's only one quick question. My question is, if there is ANYTHING wrong with the VTEC, will the check engine light come on? I have heard conflicting stories on this, some yes and some no. Can someone please shed some light on this for me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

I'm almost 100% positive that it will throw a code. I have the H22a in my lude, and I have one of those ebay ECU's and when the VTEC solenoid is unplugged, it throws a code as soon as I start it up.
