If you are just starting out, I recommend attending a Jeep Jamboree http://www.jeepjamboreeusa.com/ . Alot of people dont like them because they are expensive. I agree they are expensive but if youve got the cash, its something you should consider. Most of them have Jeep 101 courses now. That gives you the opportunity to put your Jeep through its paces in a controlled learning environment before hitting the trail. Most of the Jamborees are well stocked with spotters that know the trails and actually like to help. Its a good way to be introduced into the sport. You will also meet alot of off roaders from your area as well as other areas.
My wife and I attended our first one back in 98. We've gone to several more since just to support them.
Where are you at? Ive been to several JJ on the east coast and can recommend a good one and steer you away from the lesser ones if this sounds like something you may want to try.

Yes, thanks for the come back. Live north of Syracuse, n.y.
Where we get the Lake Ontario lake effect snow storms, whiteouts and
cold winds , drifting ect..
I don,t know if I will get into to much off roading yet I just need to learn a little on Jeep abilities and so on. I have been in the boonies with friends up in the Tugg hill area trout fishing. Driveing down creek beds and so on. Was
raised in this area. Lots of sports to do. Love hunting whitetail and stream fishing.
Jeep came with a set of Goodyear a/t,s on it. Still enough tread on all the tires for safe driving yet being a new vehicle to me' I would like to get her a set of BF Goodrich A/T,s. Original owner lives in Potsdam N.Y. but no contact yet but his answering mach.. Want to ask him questions on maintenance done
to vehicle and so on. Later: Longfellow

Hey, good tips by that website. There is a Top 10 list of Basic off the road mods that he has that is interesting.
One that I thought was important was that most XJs do not come with front tow or recovery points. I checked all the possiblities and the factory ones were $75 each. So finally, I ended up buy a front tow hitch reciever unit from JC Whitney for $135 which has built in recovery hooks and you can use the reciever for a d-ring setup also so you can pull from the middle. The tow hitch (made by Hidden Hitch) also strengtens the unit body up front too.
