Looking to buy a moped

Ok. A good family friend was talking about how they got their son to get a moped license and got him a moped, thus eliminating the hassle of them driving him everywhere and getting more experience on the road.

My parents thought it would be a considerable idea and so far, it may look promising for me.

So I'm looking for a good moped. I'm not looking for ones that look like Vespa scooters and ones that have a feminine feel to it.

I'm looking for one that looks more like a motorcycle, and that can do at least 40 MPH, and I guess, if I say so, no more than 50 or 55 MPH. ANd if it's slow to begin with, I would like it to be easily customizable so I could get it up to that speed range.

I have no clue in where to start, and I just want something affordable, reliable, and practical, and can be used in all four seasons.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

If it does 40mph + then its not a moped. If its stock, an illegally tuned moped though can do more but thats one hellova risk. Anyway you should get a Yamaha DT then.

Does anybody make true mopeds anymore? I thought the definition of a moped was a small vehicle that could be propelled by means of pedalling or by the small motor attached

Motor + Pedal = Moped... right?

Cuz if thats the case, then I can't recall the last time I saw anybody with a pedalable <--- I think I just created a word moped

I didn't think you did, but I guess since they are required to use the same roads as regular cars...

Maybe you could get one of those Segways and sup it up! I love those things

i don't think you need a license for anything under 50cc.

Aprilia makes a sick lil scooter, the SR50R.

You need a license here in NJ for a moped. need to be 15 or older.

Also, the requirements are the engine can't be bigger than 50cc although people have gotten away with keeping hte engine that size but having it being able to go as fast as 40 MPH.

that Aprilla SR50R looks pretty sweet. might want to go with that one. think thats as close as your going to get if you want something that looks like a motocycle.

Here it cant go past 30kmh. Then there's EU mopeds, class 1 & 2. 1's 25kmh and 2's like 45kmh.

well you could get it at 50cc's then bore it out. what they don't know can't hurt you. basicly get anything that you like that's legal, then make it master, it'll be a good learning experience. i'd suggest that aprilia, they're a good company and those 50r's look pretty sweet. as for mopeds, i don't know any that go that fast.

See, to me, that Aprilla looks too much like a scooter to me.

I was thinking, like this: the Tomo Streetmate. It only goes 30MPH, but I assume there's a way to change that top speed.

Or this;

Text says; "Dakota. Almost impossible/hopeless to improve."

Dude, im from the freakin origin country of mopeds. Everyone has got, or has had at least one moped here. Im seriously proud of you for not wanting a scooter (wich is like a kia compared to a mustang), but a real moped.

Oh, that Aprilia POS is a big fat NO. DONT! Dont listen to him

AND You dont EVER buy a new moped. Girls do that, they get a brand new boring scooter that never breaks. At least til one day when it breaks, they dont know how to fix it and get a new one from their dad. The fun thing with the mopeds are the mechanical/fixing part, not the driving, hell you can just buy a bicycle for that.

The most difficult part of buying a moped is telling your parents that you're gay.

Just get a Suzuki Dr 450. It looks like a dirt bike and is a fairly common bike used on the streets. And if you wanted to you could take it to do some mild off roading if you wanted to with its longer suspension travel and mono-shock.
