Problem starting

I have a 1991 Cavalier rs, 3.1 litre, for the last week or so when I turn the key it wont turn over the first time then it goes the second or third time, then last night It wouldnt go till I had been trying for like 5 minutes, I thought the battery might have died because nothing happened when I turned the key, but the headlights still worked, does anyone know what this could be?
