Alternator Belt

Mine snapped... I replaced it, I wanna make sure that I have it tensioned right... How do I do that... and if it's not tight enough, how do I get it tighter... (it doesn't have an automatic tensioner, and I saw no way to tighten it[other than hand-tight])

Thank you! I would have told you how to do a turbo car, since I have never owned a NT. So just guessing here, you are looking for possibly an adjuster that moves the alt so the belt gets tighter, or if you don't have that get something to pry it with (don't go crazy and break shit though). I have a belt gauge for setting tension, but if you don't have one a good rule of thumb; you should have it tight enough that you can only move it about 1/2"- 3/4" when you push on it with a reasonable amount of force. My advice to you is to go get a chiltons manual also. You are going to need it ;)

well, there's no adjuster (that I have seen)... the alternator is held on by two bolts... one seems to be just so the alternator can swivel (doesn't tighten, allows the alternator to move closer or further from crank to adjut tension) the other is a slotted bracket... I see no way to push the alternator to a tension while tightening the bolt... if so, I woulda had no problem...

Does a 420a even have a tensioner? IDK. Apparently not in this case :rolleyes: Like I said, get a chiltons. Can you not get a pry bar in there? to put tension on it while you tighten the bolt? Why don't you pm one of the NT guys? |eclipse| , gthompson, or someone!

possibly... a large prybar... but I don't see a tensioner... I'll pm Gthompson... see what he's gotta say

The 420a does have a tensioner on the alternator, I believe it runs horizontally with belt right on top of the alternator itself. There is a lock nut sort of thingy that you have to loosen up that faces the frame rail, and then the actual tensioner bolt head faces the firewall. The first couple times, a trouble light helps out immensley because it's kind of a tricky bolt to find. I haven't worked on mine for awhile so I'm sorry if the explanation is sort of vague, but let me know if you have any troubles or anything. I actually have a motor pulled right now that has the alternator still on it, I'll see if I can snap a pic of it if you have trouble finding it.

sry haven't had much freetime, not even here at work... and too much is going on... (house, two cars, three jobs, baby on the way...need I say more)

yeah, I haven't seen the tensioner... I will look, but a pic would definitely be a help... thanks for the info though...

search ebay for your alternator bracket and you'll find a pic of the tensioner there with it, it's like $5 to buy both of em together
