MAF-T noob Question

Hey guys...

So, I finally bought my VR4. Still have a little less than a month before I can drive it, but atleast I have it. The guy I bought it from said that he'll throw in an uninstalled MAF-T. Well, I don't REALLY know what it is. I THINK it has something to do with the ECU and tuning the fuel/air ratios. Can someone please give me more details about what it does or can do? Thanks guys!

you won't need to use the MAF-T with a stock vr4. however, it is good to have if you plan on upgrading turbos (with supporting mods of course).

here's a little description http://www.machv.com/maftranslator.html

ask Igovert about his opinion on it. he knows more about it than me.

There are some threads about it. Basically the 'MAF-T' is the translator that allows you to run a larger MAS usually from an LS1 or LS6, it translates the different signals they run on, so the ECU can function with them. I'd try it if I got it for free, if nothing else you can always take it back off, and sell it.

So does it come with just the translator or is the seller including hte larger MAS as well?

There is an excellent write up I saw for tuning the MAFT, PM me if you want the link.

Sidenote, there have been some issues with the larger MASes leaking. But in general it's a decent mod, IMO. And if you find you don't like it, it's easy to swap out and sell.

Congrats on the vr4!

I'm not entierly sure on that. I really don't know anything about this peice, but I figure if it comes with the car I might outta learn to use it...and well, use it. :)

I guess that is a good question to ask my seller. Maybe he'll know...

OK, I asked my seller he said it does come with the larger MAS and everything it needs to work....except the palm pilot to tune it with. Anyone have further ideas?

further ideas? ask your seller more about this 'palm pilot.' to me it just sounds like your basic datalogging software loaded on a handheld device (palm pilot, pda, whatever you wanna call it). but, it's probably a bit different setup since it would have to interface with the MAF-translator (instead of the diagnostic port for datalogging).

Um, I'm not aware of a need for a palm pilot lol.

how would you tune it without having a palm pilot or laptop or somethin to connect to it?

that's the question at hand: how do you control the MAF-T? does it come with a controller? do you need your own? ask your seller more about this.

be careful, you're confusing TUNING with CONTROLLING the MAF-T. find a way to control the MAF-T. whatever way this is (via controller with knobs, computer) it probably only has inputs. i bet it doesn't output any information for you to monitor. And now for monitoring, get a datalogger. once you monitor all the data, then you can adjust it properly using the controller for the MAF-T and other methods.

Ahh, it's all so complex...I'm hoping that the manual that comes with it explain a lot of that for me....

The MAFT has 4(?) knobs that you use to tune it. The directions for tuning it are in the links I sent you. As with any tuning device, you should be monitoring any changes you make...that is where hte datalogger or wideband are necessary. However, no palm pilot is necessary to tune it.

thanks for clearing that up, Igovert. what i was trying to say is that with the knobs on the MAF-T, all you can do is tune the MAF. AND, as Igovert pointed out, you should be monitoring other parameters (i.e. knock, IATs, EGT, etc). to monitor the other parameters, you would need a datalogger. some palm pilots can load datalogger software and be used as a datalogger.
