I have had a problem for quite sometime and now need some advice. The fan clutch has been changed 3 times now and the engine sounds really loud. It started when I changed out the water pump and while doing this I decided to change the fan clutch at the same time and ever since then I have had a loud engine also have low power.
Very rarely the engine goes quiet and have the power back, I am finding it hard to believe that it is the clutch. Has anybody had any issues with a heavy engine load caused from the water pump?
Any help would be greatful

start with the basics ...
is your belted routed correctly?
are all the pulleys rotating smooth and straight?
was the fan clutch installed properly? is the fan-to-clutch bolt torque correct?
could be, the belt is slipping (belt or belt-tensioner needs replaced). This would explain low power and the occasional return of quiet and power.
how is your engine temperature?
any spikes or drops in the battery voltage gauge on your dash?
what year is your truck?
is it possible that the loud engine noise is not related to the clutch? (for example, an exhaust leak?)

I looked under the hood yesterday and I am not sure how stiff the fan clutch is supposed to be but when the engine is warm I asume the clutch should start to slip to allow the engine speed to go faster than the fan itself is this correct? if so my clutch isn't doing what it is supposed to.
Even when the engine is hot the clutch still doesn't spin by itself when the engine is turned off I would expect to see it continue just a little can someone confirm if the clutch is supposed to do this or not
Thanks

Go and get a good dealer OEM fan clutch.
It will only hurt one time.
Aftermarket clutches do not get the job done right.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I have 2000 Jimmy, and when i start it up in the morning sometimes it roars like the fan clutch is fully enguaged, then gets quiet again. While driving it will get loud and lose alot of power, then get quiet and regain that power randomly. It seems to happen everytime i stop and take off from a light. I will be driving around fine, nice and quiet, plenty of power. Then i will stop at a light. When I take off the engine fan roars and i have lost alot of power. Then a half mile or so down the road then fan quiets and i get my power back. Wierd????

Time for another one??
A little noise when cold is normal.
Proper test on a fan clutch is to see if it kicks in and moves the air when rad gets up to around 200 degrees.
And remember Dealer oem parts and fan clutches only hurt one time.
Aftermarket may be a lot cheaper but they will bite you in the rear many times.
