I just bought a 1998 Trans Am and was wondering what are some reccommended first mods for the car to get some more sustainable power from it. I only have about $1,200.
Are those ram air kits that pull from in front of the radiator any good?
Or should I just get a cold air box?
Anything else like a throttle body, exhaust and header preferences?
My only car i've owned prior is the red roller skate in my signature..

well is it a ws6? or does it have a ram air hood? The best things for the ls1's is exhaust, and headers. And a diffrent intake manifold and a cam respond REAL well on them. But i would do a Headder back exhaust on it. And is it a stick or auto?

Sounds like a very good start to me. I think if you get a good deal and install stuff yourself, you might be able to squeeze headers in there. Is this a auto or stick though?

Well It's not a WS6, nor has the ram air hood. It's just a plain old Dark Blue T/A Automatic.
But it does already have an SLP airbox. (Bought As Is Below)

I'm unsure about doing a tranny swap as im going to be pushing a bit of power and think an auto would be easier to control on a strip. Though i've never driven a huge car with a manual, I know on honda's you need the stick to wind up the gears to get a good enough takeoff, but in a T/A i'm assuming an auto should be fine?

just put some 3.73 in the rear end, and get a transgo shift kit, with a diffrent stall, waite till you fell how it takes off then.

He is right. Usually Auto's are better strip cars even in stock form and with a transgo shift kit and stall you will be eating up 6 speed's left and right. Dear god I hope you have 3.23's though.
