fuel pump or relay?

My 1983 Trans Am died on the way home. Drove fine for about half an hour on a very hot day then died a block from home. It would restart for about 10 seconds then die again. I let it sit overnight and now it runs fine, but I haven't tried to go anywhere. It has around 135k miles on it and every GM car I've ever owned needed the fuel pump replace at around 130k but it is not an easy project. Also, when I turn the car off I can hear the fuel pump "hum" for a few seconds.

I could replace the relay for a few bucks but don't want to find out the hard way that it was still the pump. The mechanic I want to take it to is a bit of a drive so I'd like someone's opinion before I try to get there. I've also heard that the oil sending unit could be involved.

Thanks!

If the relay is cheap that would be my first step. But you might want to try to troubleshoot it a little more before you just start replacing stuff. And I dunno if the oil sending unit could be doing this...I doubt it.

I know on mine the Oil sending unit is tied to the orange wire on the fuel pump relay. my sending unit was going out on me today among other things and I swapped it out. simpe 18 buck swap.

The oil pressure switch is a bypass for the relay....If the relay isn't working and you crank the engine, once the oil pressure reaches 7psi the switch closes and energizes the fuel pump.
If you hear the pump run when the key is switched on, then the relay and pump are working...I'd check the ignition module. Pull it and take it to Auto zone or the like and have them test it (make sure they do it several times to get it hot) If you replace the module, use only AC Delco and be sure to use the thermal grease that comes with the new module between the module and the mounting surface in the distributor.
