The parking brake on my 4wd, ABS, extended cab pick up will not hold the truck from rolling backwards. I adjusted the cable to get the brake to hold fairly well in forward, but its like the brake is not existent in reverse. Fully applied, the truck rolls backwards easily if its not in gear. Was doing the same in forward direction before I took up on the cable .
I think I understand that the brake is a sort of shoe device inside a drum that is integral with the disc rotor ?
My question is this: I got to change the pads (almost 50K miles and they are getting thin), so when I got the brakes apart, does the rotor/drum assembly come off without any issue ? I am concened there might be ABS components to worry about inside the rotor /drum.
Thanks for any inputs

No abs parts in the rear drum/discs. Only thing in there are the horseshoe pads for the e-brakes and the adjusters

Thanks, Is it relatively easy to pull that apart ? I have done lots of brakes, but each (especially rear) disc set up is a bit different. I guess my thinking is this: I dont know why the brake wont hold in 'backwards' so I am guessing something needs replacing. A repair kit is $200 and I dont want to spend that if I do not have to. And I dont want to take this apart too many itmes either. Once to diagnose and once to repair is fine, so long as the disassembly isnt too bad.
The pads on the disc brakes need replacing so maybe I will wait to get those until I pull apart the drum part to see whats up in there.

I took it apart today, and all I could see to make any changes to is the adjuster wheel. Is that supposed to auto - adjust ? Didnt take much, propably less than a turn to get it to the drum.
Now I got to go try the whole thing out

Took the rear brakes apart on my Sonoma. The shoes looked fine, but seemed like they were not adjusted out as far as they ought to have been. It looks like maybe there is an auto adjuster on the shoes ? I cranked it a few notches manually and now the parking brake works a bit better: at least it does something in reverse direction. The rotors are kind of messy: corroded and pitted so I guess thats the next thing to change out.

Adjusting the shows is critical to both regular braking as well as the parking brake...
Put your drum on, using a screwdriver in the back hole, run the adjusters up until you can no longer turn the drum/disc. Back of ever so lightly until you can turn the drum/disc again.

The main vehicle brakes dont need adjustment, its just the parking brake. This system has 4 wheel discs and then a set of sort connected shoes for the parking brake in the rear.
I think there is supposed to be a mechanism that takes up on the shoe brakes every time you use the parking brake, but I am not sure it works or my observations are right.
Anyway, I did adjust the shoes as far out as possible and still turn the drum/disc assembly (the rotor has a small drum as part of it, for the parking brake, and to <I am sure> add lots of cost for replacement)
