'00 F250 PSD Question

Ok quick question. I have a 00 F250 with the 7.3 PSD. I have noticed what looks like an oil film on the turbo inlet. Seems like I have read somewhere that this could be a sign of problems with the turbo. It runs fine with no problems except I have noticed a small oil leak, but havent figured out where its coming from. I guess my question is what are the signs of problems with the turbos on these trucks and what are the fixes? Thanks.

A light oil film on an intercooler duct is perfectly normal. Ford'll even tell you a little seepage is normal. Guys who aren't diesel techs and post on these sites will tell you you're turbo is going out and the universe is about to implode. I wouldn't worry about it, when you move that much air, you are going to siphon some oil from the crankcase vent. Now, if you're dripping oil from the ducts, I would definately expect something, but otherwise I wouldn't think twice about it. If you're real worried, then you can take the inlet duct off the turbo and check the shaft for movement. Just reach in and grab the impeller and see if it's loose or not. Ten bucks says all is well. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about people posting stuff they don't really know to be true, they just tell what they think. I frequent ATV forums and its a shame how people are lost but try to sound like they know everything. Anyway I only notice a very light film of oil on the pipe, no drips. It just had me wondering cause I try to research when Im not familiar with something and I know Ive seen someone post before it was a big problem. Anyway thanks.

If you look there is a hose/pipe that comes from the crankcase vent, either on one of the valve covers (most probable) or from down by the engine - I am not sure which on your engine. Mine is a tad older (1995). This draws crankcase air, which usually carries along with it a light oil mist, out of the crankcase instead of venting it to the atmosphere which is where the oil film on your intake before the turbo comes from.

As for my bonafides, 38 years working on cars, motorcycles, mowers and pickups (including diesels) on the side, 12 years driving semis, 14 years managing semi truck and trailer repair shops and training mechanics in some phases of the work.
