Hi Guys/Gals.. Whenever I am driving I turn the air conditioning on and it blows warm air so I turn the air off and back on it still blows warm air. Now if I was to stop the car turn the air off and back on it blows cold air???? I can't figure out what is going on. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I forgot to add I have a 99 ford taurus SE

Joe

The vent doors that determine if hot or cool air is piped into the cabin are vacuum controlled and sounds like one is sticking.

Your car isn't posessed, it's just malfunctioning. My wife is posessed. (AARRGHH! IT BURNS!) I don't know that is the problem, just speculating but someone will come along and give a better answer and a fix.

Okay no AC in drive but AC at idle?
I am going to assume you have the Vulcan Engine here?
Does the compressor come on while in drive at all and if does is it just not putting out cold air?
The first things I would check would be the condition of the belt and then I would check the refrigerant pressure.
If the refrigerant is low it will need to be serviced and repaired by a certified technician.
If the belt appears fine as does the refrigerant pressure then carry it to an AC shop.

When you say "stop the car" do you mean you just park it, or do you mean you shut the engine off? When the AC blows cold, will it continue to blow cold if you start to drive the car, or will it blow warm when you start to drive?
If the latter, then it sounds to me like a vacuum issue as Huney1 suggested.

Hi Thanks for your reply,
yes I have the vulcan engine..the compressor does come on while driving but no cold air.. Also where is the belt located for the air?

Hi Rod Thanks for your reply,
by stopping the car I mean I come to a complete stop say at a red light or stop sign. Then I turn the air off and back on and it blows cold air as I continue to drive. Now if this is a vaccum issue is this something I can do myself?

"Anyhow is the vaccum thing something I can do myself if that is the case?" HA! I lost five bucks on a bet spelling vacuum, but it is vacUUm, two U's, one C.
Some auto parts stores have some real sharp technicians behind the counter and I'd ask around and find out what door(s) opens and closes to make the cold or warm air flow and where it is located. Then I'd open it up and take a look see and oil the hinges or whatever. How about your Ford dealers shop, ask the service writer to ask a mechanic where he'd look and what do do. Maybe shorod has a vacuum schematic showing the tubes and doors specifying what door does what.
Other than that, go to varous independent shops and ask them and you might run up on a technician who knows. OH! Good idea here. Find a shop that specializes in air conditioner repair and ask them. In any event, shouldn't be an expensive repair because not like you have a bad compressor.

I believe your car has an electrically controlled blend door. The blend door motor is located under the center of the dash a little to the passenger side. This motor controls the blend door to either give cold or warm air as you turn the selector. Stick your head up under there and see if you can find it. Have someone move the selector from hot to cold to see if the motor moves the lever that operated blend door.
