Grand Am Starting Problem

I have a 93 GA auto with the quad 4.
When trying to start after getting gas the other day, I got nothing. Not even a click. Had it towed to a garage. When they turned the key, it started right up. They then checked around under the hood and found that the coolant was way down and the rear heater hose was leaking pretty bad. Found nothing wrong with the starting system. They fixed the hose and added coolant. When I went to pick it up, it would not start again. The next day they started looking for problems. Finally after a lot of time and consultation among the mechanics, they found that the car would not start in park. Something to do with the transmission not realizing that the car is in park. The indicator light in the console would not light in park. The only way to start the car now is to turn the key to the on position while stepping on the brake in order to get it out of park. Then I have to put it in neutal just right so the indicator light goes on. Then the car will start. The mechanic says it's a $200 + part on the transmission. Anyone know what I have to do to fix this? Thanks

sounds like the park/neutral safty switch is bad.

And I dont think they cost any where near $200.

Just priced online. Looks more like $100. How bad are they to change? Anyone?
