networking PC and laptop

I have one of each, both have WindowsME on them etc. I need to network them so I can transfer some files from the laptop to the PC. For those of you who don't know, Alex and I split up last week, so he's taking the laptop so he can have a computer. I need to get my work files off of it before he takes it. I have a hub and cable...I just need to know where to go from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Wouldn't it be as easy to save them to a disk or CD and then transfer them that way???

The files I need are on the laptop. I don't have an external CD burner and floppies (A drive discs) are too small for the size files I have on there. It would just be easier to network, i just need to know how to do that.
