Does anyone know if the xj220 has any visible heat sheilding foil in the engine bay? that can be seen in the tamiya model perhaps? All of the pics i have researched do not show any but i want to be sure. Also does anyone know if testors enamel spray has anything close to that greenishl metallic color that some xj220 bodies have? thx for the help

Sorry I can't help you on the reference pictures, but I'm sure a serach here on the main forum on AF and Google should turn something up.

I might be able to help you on the paint issue though by advising you to stay away from Testors enamel sprays if you can possibly help it! :D
Enamel paint dries for ever and I have heard AWFUL things about the spraying properties of their nozzles.

Tamiya do awsome spray paints that dry very quickly and I guess their instructions even suggest one of their TS colors for the car. Can't you find them? It would be worth your while to even order on-line IMHO.

yes i am aware that tamiya has a metallic color suited for this car, but i just want to see what testors has to offer, because i love their metallic colors, especially ruby red metal flake, which is basically stop light red in a can.the image below is ruby red M flake cleared with ts-13 in the same day. This is being stripped right now because of dust particles and because i dont think red suits the xj220

The colour your looking for is British Racing Green, or Brooklands Green depending on the company. Personally I've never seen the XJ220 in the metallic but rather the ordinary old Bentley or Jag colour.

Not sure on this one. BRG cars look almost black in most indoor pictures. I would think Model Master Teal Metallic (or is it pearl) would look close over a dark primer base.

The green used on the XJ220 was called Silverstone, Jaguar colour code JD3, almost looks blue under some conditions. The official XJ220 colours were named after famous race circuits - Le Mans Blue, Monza Red, Spa Silver, Daytona Black and Silverstone Green. Give the code to an automotive paint supply store that carries Standox, PPG or similar and they should be able to mix a small quantity for you. Ask them to substitute the finest grade sliver and metallic particles availiable so it looks better in scale.

I just happen to know this because I've recently been looking into the colours for my planned XJ220 build. I've settled on Monza Red, cause I think the car looks looks superb in a dark metallic red. :)

For all the colour info you could possibly want, try the Standox formulation database. (http://www.sxcolor.info/scripts/colorinfo.dll/getpage?b=1&m=001&l=3&page=home)

thx rally raider for your exstensive info, but i think im still going to go with testros enamels, i just bought testors enamel british racing green metallic, and turquoise metallic( spray cans). Which of these colors do you guys think is a better match? Would it be possible to base coat with BRGM and then spray the turquoise?

Oh, come on- Testor's enamels are useless. You may as well dip the body in latex house paint. Take you build seriously and get some real paint. If you're going to use rattlecans, Tamiya TS is the only option. (OK, Haus of Quolor may be a distant second.)

Actually Andy, Testors newish Lacquer line is very nice believe it or not but i rarely find a shop that carries the line. Though the paint still comes out of the can a little heavy, very nice results ive had with it.

i am taking this seriously, i really like testors enamel metallics over tamiya metallics. I know that testors has bad spray nozzles. I would normally go with tamiya but this is a metallic color, and IMO there is something about ts metallic sprays that just seem fake.

Hey Chad- the Testors laquers I'm sure are a completely different beast. I haven't tried them (mostly due to the limited range of colors)- but the next time you make it down my way, Hobbyworks has a full rack of them .

As for the metallic enamels, the last time I tried them I waited two years and they still never hardened. :disappoin (So I'm opinionated.)

Tamiya TS metallics (like most metallics) benefit greatly from a clearcoat.

well what i do is spray the enamel metallic and clear with ts-13 or duplicolor clear. You are right about them not hardening though. The only TS metallic color ive ever really liked was gunmetal and some other darker metallic colors, the others such as metallic blue and M red just dont look right. However im sure the mica colors are nice.

It may have worked for you in the past, but sooner or later spraying laquer clears over enamels will destroy your paint job. I'm really not trying to be a jerk about it, but it really will bite you. Laquer solvents are too hot for enamels- chemically it is not a safe practice.

hmm...so you mean that if i lacquer clear enamel then overtime the paint will mess up? Or are you saying that eventually using lacquer clear will ruin my paint job? i also have some future floor polish that i could clear it with through my airbrush

MPWR

It could happen immediately, or it could happen days, weeks, or even months later. You may occasionally get lucky and have no visible reaction, but spraying laquers over enamels is always a craps shoot.

Future is safe for spraying over over anything- acrylics are not a 'hot' medium, so they won't attack anything. But Future is not designed to be used as a clearcoat- just as a floor polish. It has a nasty way of crazing or hazing when applied in mulitple layers as a clearcoat. Tamiya X22 is far superior in this regard (worth the additional price), and just as easy to use in an airbrush.

Oh yeah, spraying TS-13 over Testors enamel is a very very bad idea. There is a very easy chart to follow on Tamiya site and others as to what types of paint can and cannot be sprayed over each other. Im to lazy to link:rolleyes:

 LOLLER SKATES

well my 1st question was is there any heat sheilding on the xj220, then i asked if there is anything out ther close to that silverstone green( spray cans perhaps?) color on the xj220. However i have this british green metallic from testors which i think is close to british racing green as mentioned b4. Does anyone know if there is any carbon fiber on this car?
