Catalytic Converter

I have a 1998 Malibu and, regretfully, not in a position to get rid of it and get something more reliable. I swear the thing is cursed. Anyway, I'm not very experienced with making car repairs, but obviously, I'd like to get better at it. Recently my car's Check Engine light came on. When my mechanic plugged it into his computer, it listed a problem with the catalytic converter. He said that either means the oxygen sensor(s) is/are bad, or, more likely, the convert itself is bad.

He said it would cost about $300 to replace the converter. My questions are this: is replacing a catalytic converter something I can do myself? AND... if I can... how?

No and you get a welding torch, cut the old one off and weld the new one on. Can you do that? best way - find a mechanic or welder and buy a universal cat. In Houston, I got one replaced for $120.

Okay... I get the hint. A catalytic converted isn't a DIY (well, not for ME, anyway). Thanks for the education!
