im still wanting a new car, the cavalier just has to much of a boy racer feel to it for me. My gf still wants to buy it and she needs a new car bad. So here is what i am looking at.
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?&min_price=&distance=100&dealer_id=576373&lang=en&bkms=1153411926202&mod_bookmark_id=null&end_year=2004&make=SUB&address=48195&start_year=2004&num_records=&certified=&ref=srl&ref=srl&car_id=201957496&car_year=2004&cardist=18&isp=y&max_price=&advanced=&search_type=both&model=IMPREZ&ref=srl#vdptop
the sales man says he can sell it for $19500.00 plus all the extras. I can put 2 grand down on it, and credit is pretty good, 716 is my credit score.
Is this a deal or not? Can someone of you people give me the good and the bad of the WRX's please.

Pretty clean, and should serve you well in inclement weather.
I actually disagree with the 'boy racer' assessment. It's a more 'mature' car that requires a higher starting price to keep the wannabes away. Although some who have it are indeed 'boy racers', generally most are enthusiasts.

the pros are
4 doors, turbo engine, decent power potential, decent interior, and built good.
the cons are
4 doors, laggy turbo, small tires and wheels, and most important of all... the glass tranny. and its somewhat hard to work on.

hmm after doing some research, glass tranny is no joke. What kinda warranty does Subaru offer on its cars?

glass tranny= breaks easily, OK then.
-Jayson-

no apparently they break very easily and are not cheap to repair. On top of that Subaru doesnt like to fix them, often blaiming it on abuse or aftermarket mods.

I say don't go for it. For $2-3K more you can get an 03 Evo. The Evo doesn't have a cheesy tranny, and has infinitely more potential. I do like the WRX alot though, I just think they want too much for that car. New they can be had for $24-25K. It's the STi's that are expensive (You can get one for $23K in my area used).
Get an STi or an Evo. Just keep saving up money. Don't go with just semi faster, go all the way.

the thing is, the STIs insurance for me is too much, the wrx is gonna cost me around 210 bucks a month, i couldn imagine the STI being around 250+. For my area the WRX is priced low, KBB on that car is around 22,000, the dealer said the lowest he can go is like 20082.20 out the door.
Now i also found a 2006 Cobalt SS Superchared with 5,000 miles for 18,000 which is a really good deal. But its red and its a boy racer type car.
I asked the dealer how long of a factory warranty subaru had, if its like 70,000 miles, i might get the subaru, but i also just might lease a brand new for right now. So i wont be able to mod it, im sure ill be able to do a small reflash here and there without them noticing. But then my monthly payments will be lower and i wont have to worry about the tranny, so if the car is crap after 2 years i dont have to worry about anything, but if its working great i can turn around and buy it.

Whatever you go with, I agree with whoever said it above, never finance through a dealership. Set up the financing with an outside source, local private banks usually offer great rates, and even national bank chains will usually offer better loans then the dealerships. Dealerships take every chance they can get to screw you when they know your credit score.
Also try and put down more than 2k, it will help get you a lower rate.

I don't like the idea of leasing a car. After you pay off a car you have some equity. Also in my experience alot of times the dealership will rape you for the purchase of the car. They nail you with mileage.
This is just what i've heard, as I typically try to purchase whatever vehicle I buy. I plan on just making the remaining 3 years of payments on my WS6. If, and when that happens, its motorcycle time (Can't beat 40mpg).

well the warranty from the factory is 6 years 60,000 miles. So its got about 3 more years of warranty left. I was gonna try and save up another 1,000 bucks to put 3 grand down, then my monthly payments would be some where around 320 with 7% interest. Right they would be about 350. My insuranceis high because when i was 17 i got a speeding ticket and when i was 18 i got a drinking and driving ticket, misdeminor. Im 22 now and even though my insurance company says its not charging me for it, i know they are.

They've got to be. I'm 25 and I have one speeding ticket and one moving violaton yet the GTC only costs me $55 for full coverage and the Stealth is $95 per month for full coverage. Good thing both of those clear at the end of this year.

Man, for the Z alone it was $450 a year for liability.
Now that I have the Silverado (full coverage) and the Z, it's roughly $1000 a year. Which isn't bad for a 23 year old. But I've never had any tickets... besides three parking tickets... two of which were from sleeping in too late and the street sweeping fairy got me. :( Fucking heartless bitch.

Just shop around for your interest rates as well as insurance premium. Both of which sound high. As long as you have good credit, you can do 6.5%. Just for reference, I'm 19 and have full coverage on my S2000 and right now I'm paying $150/month, but when it will come time to renew in about a month, it will go down to $130-$135/month. And we live in the same state.

You must not have had any tickets or accidents then. 1800/year is amazing for that car. I'm upwards of $2500+ on my Talon, but I've had 3-4 speeding tickets, and one at-fault accident with a following too closely ticket attached.

yeah it is, and i do. I can debadge it, remove that stupid wing, and put smaller rims on it. Those cars come with a ton of options. And for the price i cant beat it with any used car or any other car. The way i see it, i can get a 20,000 mile WRX and be paying around 350 bucks a month for a carpayment on top of a 210 bucks a month insurance payment. Or i can get a brand new car with a 250 dollar a month car payment and a 170 dollar a month insurance payment. Not to mention the Cobalt has pretty much all the options that the WRX has besides AWD.
Also one of the reasons i wanted a new car was because i couldnt go any farther with my current engine without spending an arm and a leg. THis engine can run 12 on a stock block. Yeah its FWD and i didnt really want that, and yes it has a big nasty wing. But i can remove the wing.

Not to sound like a GM hater or anything, but you need to look at more than just the monthly payment. There's gas, there's insurance, maintanance and depretiation just to mention a few. You need to work out the math for your situation and when factoring everything in, which one will be the cheapest and which one will give you the most satisfaction after driving it. Good luck.

yeah i think GM is going to. Im actually looking at a Saturn Ion Redline, i know ive doged these cars in the back for the stupid center gauge display. But every review ive ever read about them said they were easy to get used to and wernt a problem. I think the Redline has less of a boy racer look to it than the SS S/C. More toned down. ANd i do like the suicide read doors.
Financially GM seems to be the way for me to go, i can get the most car for the lowest money. I know GM cars depreciate in value, but i plan on keep this car for a while since it will be my first brand new car. So ill have a long time to keep it and drive it before it gets into the higher mileage like my last car.
Looking in all over, GM is my best choice right now. Financial mostly, but the car also has a 60,000 miles power train warranty as well. So does the subaru but those have the glass transmissions. The GM gets better gas mileage, 60,000 miles or 6 years the entire term of the loan will be warrantied. Insurance is cheaper than the WRX.
Whats your guys take on the Redline?

I'd go with a Cobalt over the Ion. I hate the center display, and the rest of the syling doesn't fit me that well either. I like the Cobalt's looks much better, except for the wing. You'll also want to make sure that the 0% applies to the Red line and SS trims and not just the base models.
I also don't see why you're worried about mileage so much. How many miles does the Cavy have? As long as the car runs fine, mileage is just a number.
And about those transmissions, I'm willing to bet that as long as you don't abuse it, it will last. By abuse I mainly mean dropping the clutch from above 5k. Adding more power to the car will shorten it's lifespan as well.

Why don't you buy a Saab 9-2X AWD. It's a rebadged WRX for thousands less. Plus it's a GM product, so you can probably get 0% financing on it. It will have the 5-year warranty, so even if the tranny should go during the time you own it, it will get replaced for free.

 Ok, so you don't want the Saab cause it's too much of a grocery getter, yet you want to stay away from the boy racer image... But you're all hyped up on the Saturn.
You're strange man... anywho, the Saturns aren't too bad. If that's what you like, the go for it, you shouldn't need a bunch of internet guys to tell you that. At the end of the month, it's your ass writing the payment check not us.

So you don't want a boy racer? And you do want something fun to drive, good handling (I would expect), and somewhat quick with some potential. I'm just going to throw this out and see what you think. A Porsche Boxster. A blast to take around corners, could be made quicker, its a Porsche (which is kind of cool), not a "boy racer", and can be had for $18k-28k.......
plus the ladies love a nice uber car with the top down.

edited:- perfect match-94 one of the best years- 16,500 miles on new engine but 87k on body
awd twin turbo like 400hp with system ... all for $15,000 and not too far away

you know what, common sense would say you are right. However insurance companies use some rather esoteric methods to determine the rates so IMO you should never assume. Its free to get quotes so why not find out for sure?

I was thinking Saab 9-2x as well but I too think it's too much car for what I need. Nice car though.
What about a used GTI 1.8T? With few mods they can be pretty potent cars.
