are the pistons way of for the bore size in the d series motors or are they all the same size? i have a d16a vtec and i think i might need to replace the pistons and rings.

all d series pistons are the same bore (75mm) but they do have diff compressions! but I have no clue why you would not bore it out .20....

oh because im just looking to rebuilt mine for now. not trying to make it fast yet. thanks for the help

well no sense in rebuilding it if you are not gonna bore it out .20 and have it honed....thats the right way to do it and you will be able to sleep easier at night

No point in boreing it over. As long as its properly honed it will be fine.

The stock platue hone from honda is VERY good, and inless there is some serious wear or scratches that can catch a fingernail, there is really no reason to bore, unless you're going for more power.
Also, check zealautowerks in my sig for a great compression calc, you can figure out what pistons will give you what compression with your setup.

do i need to take it to the machine shop for that? or do i just clean up the cylinder walls with the proper tools?

You could buy a hone to use on a drill, but it may not even be needed... check out how your block looks first.

Those drill hones can leave the bore out of round so you have to be very careful when using them.

Once in awhile you make a post worth posting lol.
Anyway this man is correct, drill style hones are TRAAAAAAAASH. They don't make it out of round technically though, its more of a egg shape. The middle will be slightly larger then the top and bottom like this ()

take it to a machine shop and get it honed properly, then get it hot tanked or atleast wash the cylinder walls down with warm SOAPY water. then reasemble. i thought your 4 door had a d15 vtec in it? hows it so beat already?

oh and can i use my old hf pistons and it will still be an ok compression or should i just get some z6 pistons. i really just want it to run for cheap. so basicly the usuall.

well being that HF's are 8 valves, the pistons will not work.
get some z6's.

It depends on what type of hone you use, I agree that the ball hones and the three stone spring loaded ones are junk though.

It is really going to depend on the person using it also. The best way is with a verticle honing machine, but not everyone has one in their garage or wants to pay to have it done.

damn one of those things i would have known if i would just think i little harder. but thatnks for the 8 valve reminder hybrid. and to answer your question. i bought the car not running so i planed on some problems like a blown motor. but before i had the money for a new one. but now can only afford good shape used pistons with rings. i will check it out in about a week when i get the car port space. it could be the rings but would it be so far off with just the rings? i mean 21-55-60-90 are not exacly close numbers at all. i guess i will find out when ripped apart. oh and how would i go about doing a leakdown check? thanks
FrodoGT
07-21-2006, 03:52 AM
It might not even be the rings man, the valves could be destroyed as well, a leakdown will definately help.

Most all race engines and most top engine builders hone by hand, not machine.

like i said. how would i go about doing the leak down testing?

if that valves are that bad, in every cylinder then its more then likely the pistons took a beating as well.
oh and using used rings isn't the best idea in the world, i mean it WILL work, but i wouldn't, used pistons is ok, but rings dont cost that much.

thanks i will look up the piston rings right now for a price. and i could use a head gasket off or a d16 z6 right?
TheSilentChamber

You need a new head gasket.
Are you sure your competent enough to be doing this?

Yeah used rings or "iffy" it doesnt take long for them to wear in, and its not a good idea to move them, but if it must be done... Best idea after the leakdown, pull the head..that way you can inspect everything, and either way..you have a new head gasket on there afterwards.

LOL! He's probably more competent than you, Daniel look at your god damn ford. j/k
Anyways, yes use a z6 headgasket, and no it can't be a used one.

hahaha funny funny. i probly would have asked that to. good one. im just gonna wait it out till i can get an sohc for cheap. even a d15b2 block would be nice right now
