So i was watching miami ink on tlc and it really got me thinking about what i would like for a tatoo. i've wanted one for a while now but can't make up my mind on what i want. I'll probably wait until after university and get something related to my field. I'm also thinking about military service and i'll probably get something military related somewhere on my body.

so does anyone have any tatoos here or want to get some, and what's the significance?

Since you've wanted one for awhile, why not get a mural of you getting a tattoo on your back?

haha good idea. but i'm not sure that i want something that big for my first tattoo. i want a few medium sized ones. but i'm only going to get some that have some kind of significance to my life. but that would be a fun one to get, maybe not on my back, but on my arm or something

Fair Warning: Tatoos are addictive

I have just 3 right now, but if I had the money, I'd get a new one once a month.

The first one I got when I was 17, its kanji that says "Born Lucky" on my right shoulder. And yes it really says what its supposed to, I checked (2 years after I got it:rolleyes: ) I got it because I was born on 7-11 (craps numbers or large chain of convenience stores) but I've had nothin but bad luck ever since. I'm not sure if the tatoo is the cause but as of right now its the scapegoat

Second one is auto-themed mural style on my left shoulder. It has checkered flags in the background with mufflers, pistons and some dice (the whole lucky theme) in the forefront. I like it, never seen anybody else with it but I'm sure someone out there has it

Third one is an optical illusion style on the top of my back. It reads "life" one way and "death" the other way. This one Ikinda wish I had thought about first. I was drunk at the time (definitely a :nono: for getting tatted) and was in the shop to buy my sister her first tatoo for her 20th b-day and my cousin and her friend were gettin tatted too, so I figured what the hell, me too. I saw it hangin in the guys "office" and had to have it. Its still cool and all, but a lot of people have it, both celebrities and people I've met. I absolutely HATE when people have the sme stuff as me, so this particular tatoo was a dumb ass idea. The moral of the story, do go to the shop drunk.

My next one will be one of two designs I made myself. One is a symbol I kinda created for myself. It says "FTP" if interpreted loosely which stands for For The People which has all kinds of deeper meanings behind it. The other is sort of an outline of the black marks on a cheetah's face. Cheetahs are my favorite animal and I personally find the way the lines interact on their faces pretty damn cool.

Hope that rambling helped... and don't forget. No getting tatted while drunk!

i thought that most shops don't tattoo drunk people for that exact reason. too bad that shop wasn't like that. at least it wasn't something terrible like a butterfly ;)

I don't htink I've ever been that drunk. Most tatoo shops won't ink you if you're drunk. This one actually had a sign that said "If you're drunk, smelly, or broke... come back when you're not" :icon16: But I guess my drunkness wasn't that evident. Or it was masked by the gum and the chatter-happy flock of girls I was with  They probably would've tatooed me while I took swigs from the bottle just to get them the fuck outta the shop!

Do you have a pic of that?

I'd love a tattoo but I'm a chicken and I have no idea what to get. My friends said that they don't tattoo drunk people because alcohol thins the blood and you bleed more...?

That's definately one reason, but I imagine it's also so that they're sure that you're sure, that that's what you want to get.

It doesn't really hurt that much (unless it's over the bone), and even then it stops hurting the moment they lift the needle.

Its this same tatoo but on my back and a lot bigger. Yeah, you do bleed more when you've been drinking cuz the blood is thinner. I definitely bled more than I did with my other ones.

^ that's sick.

i've always wanted a tattoo on my calf. i don't really know why, i just do. I wanted one where it looks like the leg is cut open and you can see the muscles and tendons and stuff.

edit: do you all think it wrong to get a tattoo of an image of a different culture? for example, i would really like to get a tattoo of a samurai warrior. just because of everything the samurai warriors stand for, loyalty, strength, all that stuff. I've been told many times that i posess a bunch of those qualities, and i think they are important to live by. i would get it some place that i could conceal it if i wanted to. i'm just wondering what your all's general concensus (sp?) is on gettin symbols/images from different cultures/heritages/ethnicities if you aren't from that group (if that made ANY sense at all)

^ my friend has one where it looks like the skin is beeing torn off his leg, and a skeleton is trying to climb out of it. Pretty sweet.

well i don't think it's wrong, i just think it's stupid sometimes when people are like "i got this because it's the japanese symbol for strength" or something like that. you're getting something because of the idea behind it, not because it's the symbol of something. i think yours is fine, but i think people should mostly focus on their culture because they can truly appreciate it.

hightek, I don't see a problem with it, but keep in mind this is from the black guy with japanese writing on his arm  But its not like you'd be getting the samurai on you and then start dressing like one, carrying a sword, and putting your hair in a top knot (I hope this wasn't your plan :p )
Lots of people get native american tribal markings on them and have no idea what they mean or stand for. At least you have a good reasoning behind what the samurai means and why you would get a tattoo of one :2cents:

yeah, i agree with both of you. My first tat is going to be my family crest/coat of arms. i only know a little about my own heritage, German (if i were to follow this i dunno what i would put on my body, a swaztika, jus kidding but i seriously don't know too much about the German culture). Other than that i really don't associate myselves with them and I would probably associate myself more with the Mexican/Hispanic culture. partially because of the state i live in and everything. plus my family seems to exhibit more aspects of the mexican culture than of the German culture. my grandma was native american so i have some of that in me too, but i really didn't know her too well so i don't feel comfortable puttin something from that culture on my body until i understand it more.

i'll probably put something involving the french and something involving the irish. something like a fleur de lis melting into a shamrock

I have seven tats for now, and I must say, they really are addictive, so if you got the money get many.. My first was just because, it's not bad but not great. The next couple were my own designs with the tatooers ( is that a word) twist. I have a kanji symbol on my neck that means warrior. I got that as a nick name in a high school fighting club...it was when "Fight Club" was out, and we actually did that shit, just the fighting not the civil terrorism. I've got wings on my shoulder blades that are my own design that are in the style of H.R. Gieger, if you don't know him he's the guy that designed the aliens from the "Alien" series. And my latest was on my left wrist, it's a blue "spider design" that me and a friend who was an apprentice at the time came up with. Only bad thing was we were both really high at the time of the inking which I really don't suggest to anyone. In other words, if you're thinking about getting inked, know the artists work, observe the shop( just for safety, sterilization, and other crap like that) talk to the person about what you want, ( they usually know more about it than you think you do) I've always known and hung out with all the guys who've inked me before the actually tattooing, which just kind of helps on the mental side but as long as you're kind and courteous you get what you pay for. Tattoo's are forever and can be a gift or a curse, so choose wisely...and for christs sake don't ever get some girls (or dudes) name tatooed on you unless its your mom or dad.

Another thing for before and after - get a good feed before, and have a bottle of coke handy for after. It's quite a shock on your body, so you want some sugar to settle you down some.

I have a celtic knot onmy back...mainly because of family heritage (working on a pic for you guys)

It took me about 5 years to decide i definitely wanted to be permanent, dont make a rash decision! I have a couple of mate who got tats and 12-18 months down the track regretted it.
One of them now has weird scars up both her arms because of laser removal.

Get something that will be significant to you forever, not just something your into at the time and you'll be fine :grinyes:

PS: i doesnt hurt, well mine didnt :smooch:
