Cruise Control

My Cruise Control was working perfectly but now it suddenly will not activate. I checked the 10amp fuse in the fuseblock at the end of the dashboard (passenger side) and it checks OK. Is there a brake pedal switch that deactivates the Cruise Control? How do I get to it? What else could cause a sudden failure? The Cruise was working perfectly before this sudden failure.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Yes there is a brake switch to deactivate cruise when the brakes are applied. Same switch for the brake lights. When you activate the cruise control are you getting any indication that it is on. Have you check for proper voltage at the fuse socket?
Also, if you have any SES/CEL light and odb-ii DTC error codes, the PCM module may inhibit the cruise control.

aside from the switches mentioned, another cause for the cruise control not working is if the 3rd brake light is not working, thats what the Chiltons says anyway.

After chasing this problem it came down to a 200 dollar part between the steering wheel and the column. It is known as the "coil" which is basically a slip ringer wire coil. It requires pulling the steering wheel and replacing it. The battery disconnected and air bag need to be removed. If you have alldata.com - they have drawing.

I tracked mine to the "Clock Spring"/coil/slip ring behind the steering wheel.
Alldata.com does have schematics of the cruise circuit. Part is about $200.
Read the Forum message on the Air Bag removal. Be carefull to read the install info with your 200 doolar new part.

Thanks for all the replies. The 3rd brake light & brake pedal switch are OK. The slip ring/coil I will have checked out since I don't feel comfortable working around the air bag.

Well the Air Bag is not a problem. Disconnect your NEG battery lead, Pull (for safety only) the fuses located on the passenger side behind the dash end cap.
The go have coffee. When that step is complete. Find a short flat blade screw driver with a blade about 1/4 to 3/8 wide. Look on the back of the steering wheel for 4 holes. Insert the blade into the holes a lightly rotate the blade until youfell it insert. Then twist 90 derees. If all goes well it will pop out. There is a connector that is yellow and has a orange lock. Remove the lock and the connector. That is it just be careful with it. My guess is the coil is bad because they have anewer design/Part Number. Check out Alldata.com for a parts list and more on your Olds.
