go to Autozone or one of those stores and have them 'read the codes.' Get the EXACT number code and report back to us so we can help you. It'll be something like P0300 ... basically a number with 4 digits.
Also, we need to know about your vehicle. What year is it? Vin? How many miles?

Hi Rex, Welcome to the Forum. :grinyes:
Please post back with Make, Model, Year, and engine size. I would suggest that if you're getting check engine lights coming on, take your truck to AutoZone or someplace that will read these codes for free. Write them down and post back and tell us what they are.
Don't pull your hair out and don't start throwing parts and money at this truck until you get some diagnostics going.

The big stores like Autozone and Advance all read them for free and suggest which parts their store computer program says is most likely to fix it - and yes it is your option to buy it or not - we can't help someone correctly without a code if SES is on and I for one use their free service and thank them. Many repair shops charge for this and they also are looking to sell you a part plus the labor.

There is nothing wrong with going to Autozone or Advance Auto or another big chain store. The only issue lies in the fact that the scanners they seem to use dont read every code, because in my personal experiance after I had ttaken my Blazer to Autozone I had to go to the Dealer and they got 2 codes Autozone didnt see or just didnt care to tell me about.
But if you are just looking to get a quick answer then go there, it's quick and easy.
And you dont HAVE to buy any parts if you dont want to. It's a thing I like to call will power and being able to just walk out the door.

The purpose of this Forum is to help people, which is exactly what your NOT doing. Instead of criticizing the help others are trying to give, offer your own suggestions or don't reply. You don't need to whore this guys thread with needless B.S.

jd-autotech gave us his honest opinion, he doesn't have to be told 3 times that he's wrong.
That isn't helping RexT with his problem either

I know if SES is flashing it means misfire. Go get it scanned but the scanners the autoparts use sometimes does not get all codes.
The dealer has a scanner which is much more expensive and can read tranny, engine, BCm, ABs etc... codes, the parts store can only get you engine trouble codes.
at least you have the engine trouble code and fix em first, then hopefully that'll fix your problem. If not then move on to the next one.

Back down buddy, don't tell us who help 100s of people what our mandate is.
Autozone can do the service for free and will supply a code which we can help the guy point out the problem.

What plugs did you use?
Also, you might have a bad coil.
At night run the engine and see if it is arching.
Also replace the PCV valve and get your fuel filter changed.

Yes you are entitled to an opinion. What you say about Autozone is correct, however, I believe that there has been a misunderstanding here. The other members have offered good advice. The other members of this forum know very well that the advice of the Autozone employees should not be trusted, and would never advise someone to listen to them. The sole purpose of sending people to Autozone or Advance is just to get the codes, this saves people money, because by doing it this way, they don't have to buy a scanner or pay a shop for diagnosis.
The main purpose of this forum is to educate people and help them fix their problem properly as efficiently, and economically as possible. Utilizing these free services help us accomplish this goal. The reason the others responded so defensively is because your "opinion" was phrased in way that made it appear that you were saying that their advice was bad and they weren't trying to help.

No No No! I Think Its Great How Everyonr Trys To Help Each Other Out Here, And Certainly Didnt Mean To Discredit Anyone I Just Didnt Want To See This Guy Go Listen To Az And Get Misled Thats All, Put Just To Let Them Pull A Code A Can See That. I Have A Shop And Az Pisses Me Off With The Misleding Parts Selling Sham. I Always Have Someone Come In And Want Me To Install The Part Az Told Them To Change. And I Wont Do It. I Guess I Let My Personnal Feelings About Az Get In The Ay Of My Better Judgement. Sorry

RexT, you still out there man? Did you get any codes from Advanced, if so, What were the exact codes? With everything you replaced, it sure sounds like BLT says, check for coil arcing at night.
jd-autotech, this forum is very cool and very forgiving. An apology goes along way, Thanks for sharing.

At night check to see if there is blue arching around the coil area.
It will have to be pitch black to see it.

If you folks remember about 5 or 6 weeks ago I had a very simular problem with my Blazer with an all new ignition system, and we all came to the conclusion that it was my carb. Which it was (and still is if I could run it) but I didn't worry about it too mch since I was replacing the motor with the diesel.
Sorry that I didn't do a followup then, but I just don't like a few things on AF now so I'm posting less and less.
While trying to make it run better I discovered that the fuel pump had lots of volume, but no pressure. Replacing it helped but still didn't resolve the problem.
I know that carburators are different than FI, but it gives you somewhere to look.
Good luck

I had a similar problem (running bad occasionaly w/ses light on) with my 95 and it turned out to be the EGR was clogged with carbon. Using the Sea-Foam did the trick for me. It was only $6 and it won't hurt anything.
