I've been at UPenn for the summer, and had access today to the laser cutters here. I had 30 minutes to learn some weird CAD software and draw an design with had no internet connection or source images. Of course I made an LM.

Finished file:

After laser cutter:

I know I missed tons of details and the dimentions are off (rear haunches are horrible), but I'm proud of it. I'm going to try and get a chance to make a bigger, better one.

Anyone have any line art for me to use as a source image?

Is that etched in acrylic? Looks really good! Make me one pls. And I am sure a few others on here would want one as well...if you can, of course.

I made three; they've caused quite a stir up here.

A couple things really bother me about it that I need to fix, like the mirrors being attached at the rear and the square tyres. I definitely will try as hard as I can to get some redos and make a few dozen. It is etched/cut acrylic. If I could get some good frontal shots of an LM and a road car, I could make both variants. I don't have my Mac collection with me (I have only my laptop.) I've found a couple (low-res and bad angle) shots on Google, but don't have the time between case studies to do a thorough search. Got any pictures handy?

I'd love to send a few out to some other enthusiasts. I'd love even more to have the laser etching machine, but the sticker is more than an Exige. A little much for this High Schooler.

Agree about the tires...even squares would be ok if you made the corners diagonal instead of being perfectionist and rounding them as in real life--I think.

And how about high mounted mirrors on the road car?

Someone here will post pics, I am sure, but there must be lots of photos on the web if you do a google or yahoo image search?

Can you send me the make and model of the machine? I am just curious, not about to buy one. I do have a couple of friends in CAD/CAM, as well as to a local design academy, but I don't know autoCAD or any of the other languages you need to talk to these machines.

Found these:

Is there a good picture of the clinic model head on with the doors down? I can guess the right position and shape of the mirrors, but I'd like to be accurate.

There are some very good line images ideal for your project on the Mclaren web site.

What you made isn't all that far off really - I'm impressed.

Here's the only head-on shots I have of the Clinic Model with doors closed:

You might consider using this image as a starting point if you would like a front view with doors open:

This GTR line art could also be a good starting point, but really looks quite similar to what you have already done.

The machine is a Universal Laser Systems unit from Scottsdale, Arizona, according to the text on it.

I think it is this unit: http://www.ulsinc.com/english/laser_systems/product_line/x2660.html

I guess I was fibbed to about the price, as looking around the nets yeilds prices around $12k-$16k USD. I was told $55k.

Thanks for the tip carbuilder. I didn't know McLaren redid their site.

Thanks Eric for the images. I'm going to try and make some more Sunday.

Just for fun, I overlaid the line art you gave me over the final poduct.

I can't wait to make a perfect one. Or dozen.
