Transmission problem

I have a 1997 Chevy Lumina with 173,000 miles and when I am going around sharp left hand corners the transmission slips quite a bit.Somtimes it take like five soconds to recover itself. I checked the fluid and it is reading full if anbody could help me with this issue it would be great.

That's funny you say that, because I posted that my 1997 does that sometimes on a hard left if I stomp it and it tries to downshift in the turn it'll wind out and won't hook up until I back outta the throttle...It hasn't done it since I serviced the tranny last year...I dunno, weird...

maybe ill try a filter and fluid change with a little tranx and see if that helps.

could be a partially plugged filter on top of the g-force going into that turn and given conditions causing fluid loss to the shift solonoids. Maybe????

It could also be a filter which is not securely retained, and G forces tip the filter so that the pickup tube seal allows the pump to suck air instead of oil. Either way, pulling the pan and changine fluid and filter can never hurt unless something goes terribly wrong.

I know this is a couple of months old, but mine is doing the same thing, after a right turn though.

This along with some other things I posted on a thread titled "Weak low rpm, good high". At low rpm it boggs from part to half throttle, then takes off. Then after it shifts it boggs again and then takes off again.

Have checked everything, and will finally get a scanner with monitoring capabilities tomarrow.

i too have tranny trouble , im a very newbie ,first post can somebody tell me if i have the right replacement tranny for a 1997 lumina the shot tranny has 779 stamped on the bell houseing the replace ment has 748 are they the same ? i was told that the 748 tranny was low miles ,1400 on it and was in accident ,i gots for 250 , also when changeing the tranny my self i wonder if its possible to install the tranny up into the car ,put in bell houseing bolts and then install the sub frame under it will there be clearence im doing this in my back yard on a sheet of plywood and any help would be really nice to have im all alone with this one and getting the old one out took me several hours to figure out even with the haynes manuel i have done many gm truck trans missions and clutches takes about 2 hours one out and one in i use long bolts on those and slide em in nicely ,,, but this lumina is way out on a limb to do myself ,is there a proper sequence to the the install?please fill me in on all the tips and trick used to get this in and going ,im to have back surgery in about a week and my wife will need to get to work in this lumina we are a one car household now broke down , no car no work no money and im disabled ,no garage ,lots of grass floor and soon ill have to plow the shop floor ,or install skis on my creeper lol ? please reply thanks in advance ,.. timboltz

neutralling on hard left turns is a common problem on almost all front drive chevys with this trans. service the trans, and overfill it a little, past the cross hatches on the dipstick up to the bend in the dipstick, about 1 quart over. This will cure this problem.. Poor design sump, is on passenger side of pan, and hard lefts cause the pan to suck dry, pump cavitates(sucks air) and trans neutrals out. Not true on the later model transmissions, but yes back in the 80's and early 90's, yes could be. I am going to lock this thread it is too old, start a new one if there is continued discussion.
