Most 4th gen TA's are always v8's where as the Firebird, unless a Formula, is a v6. The TA has a taller spoiler. Those are just the most basic that I know of.

A Trans Am is a trim level of a Firebird.
So all Trans Am's are Firebirds, but not all Firebirds are Trans Am's.

So it's just the higher end model?

Yup.
At least for the 4th gens.
I am pretty sure it has been that way since GM took over Pontiac.
