95 Grand Am Transaxle Problem

Hello,
I have a 1995 Grand Am SE, my problem is I can switch from park to all gears fine. But when I come to a stop I find that my shift from Drive to Park is somewhat difficult, I usually have to go to Neutral for a few seconds and most times I can then shift to Park but at times I literally have to put it in Reverse (or Drive) to move the car so as to smoothly shift into Park. I'm beginning to think my car has a mind of its own :screwy:
Any idea's as to what this is all about?

Why is it that MOST Tranny's are fine UNTIL a shop ( :evillol: )"strongly urges or suggests" a Transmission "FLUSH and filter change"...
Then the Transmission decides to slowly make its way towards complete disfunction. Why is that?!??!!??!

I've had a hard time figuring that one out!

Anyone knows or has any idea's please let me know!

So I take it you had the trany flushed? :)
If you did, did it shift like it does now before the service?

Sounds like the shift cable might need some lubricant or replaced. You can see the lever on top of the transmision, see if its loose or dirty or broke. Follow the cable on the underside and see if its loose also.

Btw if you had service done, they might hav knocked sometime off or loose too.

Ok, On the flush deal, when they "power wash" you transmision :lol: , it washes away friction material(this is what grabs to make the car go) so then the tolerances within the clutchs inside the trans get larger.
So then they tend to slip more often and burn up the fluid, so you get a double whamy!

It doesnt hurt to change the fluid and filter often.
This should be done every 15-20K miles anyway, but its such a pita that no one really thinks about it till they hav trouble with the trany.

Well I'm pretty sure the tranny fluid has never been changed prior to my ownership so that's what doing it in.:banghead:

Sometime in September I'll be doing Automatic Transaxle's in college then I'll be able to work on my own car.:sunglasse

Good luck with the auto tranny classes there is TONS to learn before you jump in! Kind of sounds like a cable issue to me also. Quick lube flushes are bad. I flush my own but no machines just pull the cooling line off and fill and flush as she goes
