bad motor rod knock

First, let me apologize for my ignorance...
I have just bought a 1993 9c1 with a bad motor rod knock... I already own a 1992 9c1 with a badly rusted body and worn ring & pinion gears.
I want to use the engine parts from the 1992 to replace the damaged parts in the 1993.
What possible problem could a bad knocking sound indicate and what parts are required to fix this?
Would I be better off having a complete engine swap done?
Both cars have the L05...
Thanks for any replies.

John

A knock is usually indicative of a spun rod and/or main bearing(s). The repair is a replacement of the crankshaft, and whatever rods and pistons are involved, as well as new bearings and a new oil pump with screen.

Thanks a lot, Silicon... the problem was the main bearing. I was still able to drive the car for two and half hours, despite the fact that the oil pressure was very low...

If it was a main bearing, you will need to have the block align-bored and then use oversize or "spacer" bearings. Don't think you can get away with simply putting a new bearing in it (or crank kit) or you will spin that bearing again, and fast, too. Probably when you fire it up the first time.
