WIP Supra with how-to

Hi all

I have been asked mainly by pm, by many people to show how i do my painting, what products i use etc.

So I have decided to do just that. This is the tamiya supra kit which i have wanted to do for some time.

I hope the people who have asked find this usefull and also those who didnt ask.

Firstly i have removed moulding lines with p400 to p1000
and as you can see the model is still shinny and is not yet ready for primer

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/2448641111.jpg

The next step is to get the body keyed and clean for primer. I use a product by scaleperfection called key and clean. This product comes with a pad which scuffs the surface whilst the liquid does the cleaning and abasive side.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/24486711.jpg

I wet the body and the pad and as you can see use a small amount of the liquid.

Then i simply scuff/rub lightly the whole body and in this case the bonnet to clean and provide an excellent key for the primer to stick to.

As you can see in these pics once the model is rinsed well in clean water and allowed to dry the surface is perfectly prepared.

I hope this is of use - this thread will be updated right through the stages of paint.

Feel free to ask any questions

Thanks for starting this thread, Jim. I'm close to finishing this same model. You should know that there are three holes in front of the winshield for two wiper blades. You will want to check the instructions to see what I am refering to. You may want to putty one of those holes. Also, are you planning on using the wing in the back?

Yeah ... I did the same. I'm waiting for the Fujimi wing to come in. The engine on this model is great.

Hi
Got some paining done!

primer has been wet sanded with p2000 and dried off
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7779.jpg

I use my tak cloth to remove any contaminants and surface dust dirt etc left after sanding. These cloths are invaluable as they remove so much rubish from the surface that the paint can go on smoth with less polishing in the end.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7780.jpg

One light mist coat of base coat black

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7781.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7782.jpg

Two further light - medium coats This black is perfect on its own cleared for a really deep black paint job
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7785.jpg

Again I use the tak cloth before i apply my flip paint - a note the base coat must be matt before you rub lightly across the surface.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7786.jpg

Then we have several light mist coats of flip paint applied Cyan to Purple

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7789.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7790.jpg

Oh and im doing a skyline too in Blue - RED
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m123/scaleperfection/DSCN7792.jpg

Then i apply my clear after useing the tak cloth - This is one mist then one wet coat as im going to put some decals on and then seal them with more clear.

Same for the skyline.

Sorry for poor pics bit blurry.

I will keep updating as i do the decals etc
Feel free to ask any questions and lmk what u think

I'm wondering the same thing as D_LaMz, I haven't seen them in any hobby shops... Do you get Key and CLean in a hobby shop or online?

You make it look so easy... This is with an airbrush, right? Nice and smooth and no wet sanding in between, I'll definately have to look into some tack cloth. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.

HOlly cow jimbob you are my hero i have that same purpelene-ish color on my supra in my need for speed most wanted game(xbox360), i love that color so much and you did a fabulous job of painting it. I like how you are keeping it stock too and not ruining a perfect supra body with a body kit( i hate bodykits on supras)

jimbob, those paintjobs look fantastic! I can't imagine what basic black would look like when painted by your talented hands.

D LaMz & daklunk: I think you can get tack cloth at almost any hardware store. It's usually use for removing sanding dust from woodworking projects right before finishing.

hi all

firstly thanks for the comments.

The tak cloth is by scale perfection and availible from www.hiroboy.com (Steve's Store)
Also the paint is availible there too - again by scale perfection.

I would recomend these tak cloth over the local stores because whilst they are taky they leave no residue whatsoever - other ones can leave a residue as they are too tacky IMO and may also pull the paint

thanks

They're flippin' gorgeous is what I think! Beautiful paint, I love the colors. Did you print the decals or did someone else? How many coats of clear are on those?

I'll be keeping an eye on these, can't wait to see the interiors...

Stunning paint finish.
Can I just ask what benefit you find using the key and clean?
Does it help with adhering paint to edges?

Stunning paint finish.
Can I just ask what benefit you find using the key and clean?
Does it help with adhering paint to edges? It will remove all mould release agents from the body and help give the plastic a key for the primer to adhere to, thus giving a better finish.

Oh yeah, nice work jim :)
