I have an '89 Buick LeSabre with a 3.8 the car runs fine but the service engine light is on. The code is a cam sensor code. The book says if the cam sensor is not reading the car will not start. How do I check the cam sensor for proper operation? Thanks in advance....Rod

I took out the cam sensor and found that the magnet has come off. The book says the car will not run without a signal but it does.

I have the same code. could you tell me where the cam sensor is located and if it is easy to change. My 89 is running rough and surging at idle also poor gas mileage. the shop said the cam sensor code was coming up and the crank sensor. Any info would help. Also could there be a larger problem that coud cause these codes to come up.say a bad fuel injector? Thanks for the info.

The car will just batch fire the injectors with out the magnet in place no reall big deal but the dreded yellow light. I still get 360 miles per tank freeway at 220k miles. I need to know how fix this too.

Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is to pull the timing chain cover and all that stuff, so unless you want to do all that, just put up with the light. Mine is off too, I just put tape over the dash in front of the light. It runs just fine with out it. As for the surging and poor gas mileage, I would change the O2 sensor and reset the computer, see if that helps.

what is the code for the cam posisition sensor?

The tech didn't tell me the codes . He said that my cam and crank sensor codes kept coming up. On the paper wpork he hand wrote these #'s and letters next to his diagnosis of the codes. hyka 38a 1503 Let me know if you can make any sense out of these. any input is greatly appreciated. rocco

CODE 41

Trouble Code 41 indicates that the Camshaft Sensor is not functioning properly.

The ignition module uses the Cam Sensor signal for timing the spark firing. The ignition module also passes this signal to the ECM to enable sequential fuel injection. The inability to properly determine engine position from the Cam Sensor will generate Code 41.

The engine will continue to run if the signal is lost from the sensor, however it will not restart after shut down. If the Cam signal from the ignition module to the ECM is lost while running, the ECM will switch to the simultaneous fuel injection mode. The engine can be re-started but will continue to run in the simultaneous mode as long as the fault is present.

The conditions for setting this code are:

the engine is running, and
the Cam Sensor signal is not received by the ECM in the last 1 second interval

Typical causes for this code include:

1) Loose or misadjusted Cam Sensor
2) Defective Cam Sensor-to-ECM connections
3) Defective ECM

Cam sensor installation and adjustment procedures call for very exact tolerances. It is for this reason that it is recommended that the service manual be consulted while performing any adjustment or replacement of the Camshaft Sensor

I hope this helps

Andy

Thank you for the information. My car has started to sputter a bit and is starting hard. Is this a sign that it will soon not start? should I get it replaced soon? Also Is the sensor accessible or should i have a repair shop replace it? Thank you for your input. Rocco

Repacing the cam sensor is a delicate and percise job that requires speical tools to calibrate. You can get the tools but, I would strongly suggest that you have a trained technichan do it. Peferiably someone who works on buicks.

I have the same problem with my Bonneville (same engine and same problem) It runs okay on the batch fire, just slightly rougher at idle.
If anyone is able to fix the problem with an adjustment, could you please let us know.

I replaced mine on the LeSabre and it was an easy job. How could it be adjusted, it only goes in one way? Of course, it didn't change anything, that's how I figured out that the magnet fell off.

There is no adjustment on cam sensor. Crank sensor yes but not cam sensor. If cam signal is lost fuel will go to port injection meaning all 6 injectors will fire at once and not just prior to combustion like it normally would. To replace magnet front cover does need to come off. I would replace cam gear at this time. Make sure you go back with same type gear and not a metal one. Metal gear can affect sensor proformance. Older 3.8's will not fail to start due to loss of cam signal, newer ones may.

I have a lesabre 91 with a problem that I think it is of the same nature. Everything worked perfect until i change the filter of air, forget to connect the sensor of temperature of the air, I lit the motor, what cause an error of sensor of temperature and it impeded the EGR to work correctly, what imply a overwarming, the sensor was connected again but i don't erased the codes from the memory, that same day I start up without problems, but when got warm the engeine turned off by it self, until allowing to cool, once get started again the toward with a similar noise to a rattle inside the engine.
After this i erased the error codes from the memory, and ran the diagnostict, it presented the error 41, this error was present before the ignition problem, and that had never given problems (I had already read previously the posted notes).
Now the problem is that it doesn't start when being hot the motor, when making the ignition the motor it rotates but it doesn't start, it doesn't present spark in the spark plugs, the fuel pressure is ok, the maximum temperature is of 90 °C in the radiator before the fan is activated. When starting up in cold the engine makes it without problems and very silent, when starting up hot makes it with noises in the valves.
I think that is a problem of the Cam Sensor as consequence of the overheating that had, the magnetic properties of the metals they get lost or altered when being exposed to the heat.
somebody can to help me, I will thank infinitely.
PD. My english is not very good, excuse the errors.

with out the cam sensor the car will run it takes other input from other sensors on the engine.
the car with not have the econmy that it would. it goes to a sequential fuel injection, based on the crankshaft position.
the code for the camshaft is PO342 cam signal circuit and PO341 fo the cam/crank error.
