Converting .avi to .mpeg

Is there a simple way to do this or a legitimate program that someone knows of that will? I've looked and found a few programs that claim to, but you know how that is. Thanks for any and all help!

change the end of the name. Go to folder options, then VIEW. SCroll down to find a box checked "Hide extensions on known file types" click it, apply. now you can change it. sadly simple. thats of course if you want it the easy way that just allows you to use the file differently. to actually convert...not sure. never had the need to.
