Hi, my son's girlfriend brought in a 96 countour 4 cyl dohc that was acting hot and when you pushed on the gas it would bog way down, but it was running. It acted to me like it was out of time, so I checked the timing belt pulled off the water pump, inspected it, replaced the belt(checked it 3 times), new thermastat, and now no spark. I replaced the crank pos sensor and connector and am getting a signal when cranking, the coil is getting power and resistance check of coil is good. I can't find any blown fuses, the cam sensor, I took it to auto zone to get it checked, they couldn't test it and didn't have a replacement in stock, but I put an ohmmeter on it and and passed piece of steel near it and the hand moved acted like it might be ok. anybody got any other ideas other than the cam sensor or pcm? Oh, I borrowed a code reader, but I couldn't get it to work. thanks

I would run a OBD II code reader on it first and see what it comes up with.

Ive worked on my timing for this car quite a bit.
Can you describe whats happening a little more.
So it runs well at idle, but if you floor it, it kinda dies?
I ask because it sounds like the intake/exhaust are off timing. The sensors you are looking at would cause a rough idle but thats about it. Have you serviced the timing belt? because VCT is a lot of fun to readjust (sarcasm). If your exhaust is running retarded you will have this problem. Its a matter of moving the exhaust sprocket up or down a tooth.
Good luck

Good luckpre-98 zetecs don't have vct.

An update on this, this turned out to be a broken flex plate throwing the timing off, while trying to find this, I lost spark, no codes, replaced the crank sensor, cam sensor and finally the pcm to get it to run, as well as several wiring repairs
