96 Trans question

My wife's 96 Beretta has a problem with the transmission(4T40) wanting to slip. I changed the filter and fluid, which helped some...but not completely. Once it warms up for a long time, it will pull alright, but sometimes still slips after stopping at a stop sign. I can put it in neutral, and then back into drive, and it will go on. Is this transmission problems, or torque convertor problems? Too, I have a chance to replace the transmission with a 3T40. Will this other transmission interchange, if I can't work out the problem with the 4T40? Thanks for your help.

I assumed the 96 auto trany was a 4t60e but i guess you have a 4 cyl and it is different, ungortunately I can not tell you if they are interchangeable, anything can be possible if enuff time and knowledge it put in to it. However, I can tell you this is a trany problem, not a torque convertor problem. If you don't have another trany of the same type to replace it with you can try other options. Lucas makes a trany stop slip which will help your trany, pull the trany line coming off the radiator and draing about 3 quarts out, then replace the lost fluid with some lucas stop slip. You may be surprised at how much it can help out.

Thanks for your help. I will try the Lucas Stop Slip before I do anything else. The engine is a 3100 V6, but I looked the specifications up for those year model Beretta's, and it listed the trans as either a 4T40 or a 3T40. I'm not that knowledgeable about these transmissions...I was just going by what the wikipedia website said. Once again, thanks for all of your help.

you were probably looking up the trany on the 4 cylinder engine. The 4t60e is the most popular FWD trany GM makes, it can be found on cadillacs, pontiacs, oldsmobile, chevys, buicks, etc...

Almost every GM vehicle with either a 3.1, 3.4, 3.8, 4.9 engine have the 4t60e... make sure you keep the metal gear select link that the trans cable snaps on to and the side cover pan... you will more than likely need those two parts when swapping a trany from a different car... I found that out thru a little trial and error.
