No. This is NOT why I'm getting rid of the Eclipse. Just in case you guys decide to eat me up.
I had been looking for a 1969 Oldsmobile Toronado for a very, very long time. And I finally found my mark. At present, there are only about 10 of these cars for sale anywhere in the US in drivable condition. I picked it up only 1 hour north of me, I cannot beleive my luck.
The vehicle has had two owners. No rust. It has the 455ci 7.5L V-8 , and at present it seems that I could run faster than it can haul ass. But the V-8 rumble is to be heard, not mashed upon :p. So it's a "cruiser", hehe. Exterior, interior and the motor are in excellent shape, with 70,000 original miles on the car.
I got this beast from it's second owner who has had it since 1971. I was given all records of every single thing by the guy. He has taken immaculate care of the car, and everything ever done to it (including even at what mileage and date gas was filled, would you beleive!!!!) has been meticulously recorded by the owner. Oh and yeah, no smog required :smooch:
This car is worth around $17,000.
I got it for $4000. :icon16::icon16:
Soon to come: pearl black shiny ass paint job. 20's. 3" dual straight pipes. Butterflies that pop outta the hood. And ofcourse, 2 15" JL W-7s to play my shiz.
Oh yeah. And some fucker smashed the rear glass on my GT. Yep, that's it. Didnt steal a thing. Just broked the glass to bits. What's wrong with people??

Wow, I never would have guessed. Good deal on it though. I can't blame you for wanting to go oldschool. After riding in my friend's 400hp small block Nova and his who-knows-how-many-horsepower LT1 Camaro, I want to build me a muscle car. My step dad is a big mustang fan and I have been trying to convince him to fund me to build a fox body mustang (even though I hate fords) and do a small block Chevy Swap, to tear up the 1/8. Your project sounds cool. But if that car is in really good condition and there are only 10 of them, I wouldn't dare mod it. I say restore, but its your car.
Hey, how can you afford to buy that but you can't afford to keep the Spyder? :screwy:

Hey, how can you afford to buy that but you can't afford to keep the Spyder? :screwy:
I bought the Toro because that is a once in a life-time deal. I could afford $4000 for that any day. The spyder was heavy on maintenence, plus I needed the cash for UC next semester, just in case FinAid didnt help me out. And mine loved breaking down everywhere. The clutch just went rather abruptly, with 3000 miles on it. I got stranded in the middle of a busy high street. I think it wasnt adjusted right. Funnily enough, the towtruck driver has offered me $12,000 for it. He's coming to have a look this Tuesday.
Anyway. Old school muscle has it's own charm. These classics are awesome to look at, and a joy to drive around town. I bought this with different priorities; it's not going to be a track car or a fast car. Just a badass looking and badass sounding cruiser for Saturday nights. Eventually. DSMs are for sale everywhere, that's a good thing, since I can get back into the game any time. But these Toros, especially the 68-69 years, are balls out hard to find. I am convinved that this has to be perhaps the best looked-after Toro out there.
Thor06, I was just thinking that too; the paint is excellent, and I should do that last. It was repainted in 1980 by the guy, because he wanted gunmetal gray instead of it's original color. He was a nutty enthusiast kinda fellow, and knew everything about these cars. I think he sold it to me because I did my research on these cars, and was blurting out everything I knew about them, and he seemed very impressed. He probably let me have it because he knew I would take good care of it. It's just so beautiful to look at. It's a whole different experience with these cars altogether. But I sure as hell want those chromed out butterflies popping out of the hood, hot rod style. Man, that would look killer!!

Furthermore, I am sure that v8 LOVES the gas, so clipsekid is right about your financial issue...and I am sure you are going to wantto insure for around $20K.

I think you're going a little overboard with the 15" w7. Have you ever heard a w7? I've heard ONE 10" and I swear it was going to blow out the windows in my buddies Honda. I bet it would sound like shit in that car, it would rattle more than you'd get sound. I think some 12" w6v2's would be more suitable for something like that.

I would tihnk it would be the other way round, since the trunk is pure steel, and rather massive. Some simply dynamatting should cure any rattle.

I'm not talking about just the rattle from the outside in the trunk, I've heard some big systems in older cars and everything rattles because it's all steel, the doors, the roof, literally EVERYTHING. And honestly, what do you need that much bass for anyways? Have you ever heard a w7? You would probably have to spend $500+ on just dynamat to get it to sound half decent.

That's what I was thinking. It must weigh a lot, but the motor seems really weak for a 7.5L V-8. Like, really slow...even the pull on this thing is lame. I'm guessing the compression, exhaust, plugs/wires and the intake need to be rejuvinated to make it what it used to be. It has been driven about 60 miles a YEAR since 1984. I'm thinking age is a factor to the inadequacy of the motor, because the old guy I bought it off said it used to shred tires when you floored it back in the day :p. But, I've found a new joy with muscle cars. I'm perfectly fine just cruising at low speeds around the block, with that insane V8 rumble, getting thumbs up from everyone. It draws looks almost as much as the spyder did, if not more. But that having been said, I can't wait to restart the shpyder project once I'm outta school. Guaranteed baby, don't you guys worry about that;)

Im a Musclecar to import guy myself. My first car was a rumbling 70 GTO. Sold it a few months back so I can get more into sportbikes. I loved and hated the car. Sounded great, but It didnt move well. Great score though! Toronados are AMAZING cars to look at. The lines run so well, blend perfectly to a clean exterior. Sexy.
Correct me if im wrong, but I could have sworn that the toronado was FWD. I know it has the massive 455, but I swore it was a 3 speed auto transaxel. :screwy:

You are correct. It was pioneering marvel at the time it came out with the FWD, since the motor sits transverse, seeming like it RWD, but is actually a FWD. The only reason why I got a Toronado was because, as you said, the lines are just amazing; there's nothing like it on the road. I was going to go with a 66 GTO as a second choice, if I did not find a Toro, but I'm lucky I did. If it's just a nice looking and cool sounding weekend cruiser, I'm not really bothered with it being FWD.
You are correct. It was pioneering marvel at the time it came out with the FWD, since the motor sits transverse, seeming like it RWD, but is actually a FWD.
