New Best for the EVO

To start, I found a massive hole in my SBR/Kinetic FMIC. Since I installed it my WBO2 and DSMlink matched perfectly, so I assumed there were no boost leaks. In an effort to figure out why this slow POS won't run 11s, I took it to ESP to use they WBO2 on thier dyno to get a comparison. Wouldn't you know, thier WBO2 reads .5 richer than mine. Having WBO2 data reading .5 richer than DSMlink certainly can indicate a boost leak! So I went home and tested it. Sure enough, massive hole somewhere inside the thickness of the core (not on the surface, can't see it). I can't get over 6 psi in the leak test, and it dumps a shit load of air. I can only imagine what it is like at 28 psi ;) So it is no wonder that I never gained any power with the upgrade. It's been porking me this entire season.
In a parallel story, my buddy Chad had a nitrous kit laying around for a couple years collecting dust. I finally got the motivation to install it on the EVO about a month ago. I assed around with a 30 shot just to get it dialed in and working right, didn't do a whole lot for track times. I ordered up jets to run a 50 shot, which came in friday.
Fast forward to this week. SBR had one other FMIC in stock, and it too had a hole in it. So much for getting a replacement in time for the Import event that was today. Being a bit aggrevated with that, I decided to install the larger jets and spray the shit out of the car today. I pulled 2 degrees of timing and gradually increased the duration of the spray until on my last run it started in the middle of first gear and went the whole run from 6k to 8k rpm.
The end result was an 11.82 at 118.82 on a 1.65 in the semi finals. Due to a crappy run in the Qualifier, I got lined up against a 10 second car (class winner) in this round, so I got knocked out. But I'll take it :) Shitty ET despite a decent 60 foot and a very nice MPH.
Now I can take a week or two off while I wait for another FMIC. I still need to run 11.7/11.8 at 117-118 without the nitrous. Then I'll use it again to get right up to the 11.50 limit (rollcage), and be pretty much done for the year. :D
Not a bad day overall, despite nearly getting rained out 3 times and having the track shut down for over an hour for an oil spill that went the whole length of the track, from a 18 second shitbox no less. Just a quick Public Service Announcement: If you think you broke something or may be leaking fluids, don't drag them all the way down the track. Pull the shitbox over and wait for the track to tow you off. Makes clean up much less time consuming :) Another thing that pisses me off is the track letting the "Run Only" cars do laps while those of us that actually came to compete nearly don't get out eliminations because of the rain that eventually came (as expected). WTF.

So the sbr fmic had a hole in it? Thats pretty shitty aren't they really expensive? I feel that sbr is overrated, especially thier own brand products, but that's just my opinion...

SBR doesn't make these ICs, Kinetic does. So it's not really SBRs fault. It's just up to them to handle it correctly, which so far they appear to be. Kinetic really needs to start pressure testing these things before they go out. Price was about the same as the buschur unit, which is the only other one I liked. I went with this one because I ran the exact same unit on my 2g, and it was kick ass. Just bad luck on this one.

Congrats Kevin! 1.65 60ft time FTW! My next car is going to be a fuckin 2008-2009 Evo. My next car will not be an old one, it will be not brand new because I think brand new cars are rediculous, but a year or two old and it will be an Evo. Sucks on the IC, but sweet on the spray. How is the stock stuff going to hold up to it?

friend of mine hit a 11.7 on his stock trubo evo3 last week no juce. I'm almost 99% sure the track's timing lights are fucked. Good job on the new best. I know how dissipointing it can be looking forward to somthing. 3 months later, I'm now on my 3rd shurflow pump..

There is a local member that has run 11.7 at 119 on the same exact mods and even the same tuning as me. My best by comparison was a 12.0 at 115. By some shady math I believe I am losing 3 lbs/min to that IC leak. Since the turbo is maxed out, it can't make up the flow like a larger turbo would, or like it would at lower boost/airflow. 3 lbs is enough to cover the difference between James and I. So I still plan to match his times without the nitrous. :) When I beat him on one of the qualifying rounds he almost shit. After the day was over I had to spill the beans on the nitrous. I hadn't mentioned it because I didn't want to answer questions about it all day, when I hadn't really sorted it out yet. Now it's working exactly as it should.
That ET up there seems awefully good for a 1.69. I would have expected a very low 1.6 or high 1.5, based on what James and I run. Must have got some good 1-2 shift action in there. :)
Here is a copy of my post on the local board, there is a link to some vids at the end.
LMAO  It wasn't easy, I've got a big mouth. I've got it pretty well sorted out now though. And I definitely like it.
DSMlink is controlling it, and it does an awesome job of it. DSMlink controls it based on rpm, TPS, speed (gear), and knock. I initially could not get DSMlink to command the nitrous to come on. Tom sent me another client that would let me limp it along one run at a time. Yesterday was the first time running the new chip though that takes care of this. Gotta love DSMlink support. I started very conservative, but now I basically run the same tuning I always do but minus 2 degrees of timing, maybe 3 where the boost is starting at 28 psi. On the dyno the car loved any timing it could get, all the way up to the same timing I run without NAWS. That was on the 30 shot though, I'm a little more hesitant to raise it up with the 50. It is still a small amount of nitrous though, as far is nitrous goes.
Starting the nitrous early really has a good effect on ET. I think most of the mph gain was from the changing weather though. I ran mid 117 on the second run IIRC, so the last run was only a 1 mph gain over that, in the much cooler air. The ET dropped by 4-5 tenths in total for the day.
Thanks to Martin and Katie (SRT4 and turbo integra, respectively) we have some video. She couldn't tell my car apart from James, so they are both here. I can't tell either, except by the ETs and the fact that I ran the right lane all day. The run against Leon is awesome. I really can't see driving the car any harder than that, but since I didn't get a log I can't compare it to my previous 12.0 from a few weeks ago where I drove the crap out of it. Leon and I had similar reaction times (676 vs 795), and very close 60 foots (1.647 vs 1.655), but he was on the quicker end in both cases. At the 330 he had two tenths, and by the 1/8th nearly 4 tenths, and by the quarter, no contest

Thats sweet. Whats it like to be running spray? Does it go throught the RPM's quicker? Does the turbo spool quicker? A small shot like that is ok on stock internals on the Evo? What about a DSM 4g63? When are you going to get your new IC? Are you still running that 2g DSMlink in there? Fuck'n A Kevin, you launch good! Did you get that Exedy twin disk yet? What RPM are you dumping at?
So now the big question... whats next? Are you going to take that car deeper into the 11's?

It does go through the RPMs a bit quicker, but it's only an extra 50 horse. The stock turbo spools so fast, I can't see it helping much there. I don't start the nitrous until about 200 rpm after the start of each gear, just to let the clutch grab and let the car settle in. People are making up to ~500 whp on the EVO motors, similar to previous 4g63s. I don't think I'll go bigger on the nitrous though, even though I shouldn't get over ~450 whp with the current configuration. Not sure when the new IC will show up, I have to talk to SBR again about it, since they didn't have any more. I am still on the 2g DSMlink, yes. My launches aren't too bad, especially for running on snow tires (dunlop graspics). If there is anything I'm good at, it's been launching. :) I'm still on the RRE clutch. I planned to get the Titlon twin with my bonus I'm getting this week, but I realized that I won't be able to break it in in time for the shootout. Although, since I'm down waiting for a new IC, maybe this is a good time to break it in? Still have to think about it. I usually launch at 5500 rpm, full throttle on the stutter box. In some of the runs in the vid from yesterday I moved it up to 5750, since the track was pretty sticky.
Hard to say what's next for the car. I think this is it for this season. The plan was to run the nitrous so I can get right up to the 11.5 second limit for the rollcage, but still have the stock fast spooling turbo on the street. I've considered stroking the motor over the winter, and running a relatively small turbo (for a stroker) like a GT3076R, so it will still spool like stock, but make a lot more HP. Not sure yet though. :)

IC leak...that sucks.
A little off topic but since there was some mention of spray. I plan on running a 14b on 4g64 at about 8psi because of the stock motor. My friend told me that along with that I should add a 50 shot of nitrous oxide into the mix. Sounds a little risky to me. He told me that it will help cool the engine and yada yada. But I don't know. What do you think? I could see maybe like a 25 or 30 shot. Would this help to cool the engine as he says, or will it be risky running spray and turbo in a stock N/T 4g64, or would it just be pissing in the wind and not worth the money? Thanks for any help, and sorry for hijacking your thread.

4g63 head swap would be money wayyyyy better spent IMO. I wouldnt run any nitrous on a stock NT car especially a boosted one.

Very cool. Looks like you have everything pretty well dialed in. A local bord member just picked up his new RnR shop car. He dropped his 2005 evo off about a month ago for a 700hp build up. I'm really looking forward to checking it out this week..

I do think that nitrous plus turbo is risky. I'm shitting my pants any time the bottle is open at any rate :) I've built some confidence in it though. I run BR8ES plugs just to be safe. Which reminds me, friday before last I ran the car with the settings right off the dyno. For some reason that I still haven't figured out, it was 13.0:1 AFR across the board in all gears. I'd say it was a bad sensor, but DSMlink was targeting 13:1. With the situation with my WBO2 and boost leak, it was probably closer to 12.5:1, but still risky none the less. I pulled the plugs and they looked perfect. I feel those plugs saved my motor on this day. I mean, even if it was 12.5:1, I was running as much boost as the EVO8 turbo would make, maxed out timing to where I normally run it, and a 30 shot from 2nd gear up. :yikes:

Don't write it off just yet, just be sure you are aware of the risks involved, and how to avoid them. I took it very slowly and used excessive caution. I really do like the nitrous, and I encourage people to consider it. The biggest problem is the lack of information out there about it. I guess the first rule of Nitrous Club is "You don't talk about Nitrous Club." :D
