Lancer Evo VI WRC Progress Thread

Now that I'm waiting for the color coat on my YZF-R1 to cure, I have nothing to do. So I am starting the Tamiya Lancer Evolution VI WRC, as driven to victory by Makinen and Mannisenmaki in the 1999 New Zealand Rally. Gonna wash and prime the body tonight and hopefully I'll be able to spray the body first this time instead of leaving it for last like the YZF

Does anybody have any reference pics of the interior and undersurface chassis? I have plenty of the exterior but can't find any for the interior, if not then I will just follow the instructions.

There is a few good articles and pictures on the evo 6 wrc in the June 2000 issue of "SCALE AUTO MODELLER" They are of the 1999 Marlboro Mitsubishi Ralliart Team.
Will see if i can scan these photos if you can't find this magazine.

I sprayed the body today, using TS-49 (bright Red). I must say, although Tamiya's sprays cost twice the money Duplicolor sprays do and hold half as less, they really are the best sprays on the market. You can get a mirror like gloss from them straight from the can. I just wish they came in more colors...

Nice.
What are the plans for the bonnet?
Does it come with a red decal across the top?

daggerlee
08-18-2002, 07:07 AM
p-man - the hood will be painted Pure White and a red decal will go across the top. The rear bumper is also painted pure white, as well as some parts of the wing, the wheels, the underchassis, and various parts of the suspension. Iam going to use Duplicolor Pure White.

This is one of the...most colorful suspensions I have ever seen... :flash:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kaiyao1/evo6wrc/susp.jpg

I suppose the bright suspension pieces are easier to recognize and differentiate when they're covered by mud and dirt in real life. I also like how the right and left halves are colorcoded by red and blue.

Not counting exhaust, engine, skid plates (I haven't put them on yet) or brakes, there are 21 pieces that make up the suspension, 6 in the front, 15 in the rear..

Yup.. I have done the Evo5 and the suspention is exactly the same.. very color full...

Nice wrok so far

The reason for the coloring is not so much to do with the mud and dirt issue as to do with identification in the pits......it saves time as there is no way of confusing the left side specific parts with the right side specific parts, parts that are the same you will notice are the same color left and right side. When you have to rebuild a suspension set in under and hour, everything that saves time matters....hence the color code.
Ironically, nearly every WRC rally team out there uses the system without exception.

Great job Daggerlee, I am busy with the Evo V and only hope I can get mine near as good as yours when it is complete......I can't wait to see the rest of yours.

Aw, don't say that :) Really I am not too satisfied with it but when I do the Evo 5 I will have a better idea on how to tackle the colors.

Ease of changing suspension also came to me as a reason, it's nice to see what sort of inventions necessity breeds.

I got done the window trim today. Here are some pics of me doing it.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kaiyao1/evo6wrc/windowtrim.jpg

Lots of masking!! Tamiya tape was used as it doesn't leave a residue on the model like some other tapes.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kaiyao1/evo6wrc/yuck.jpg

This is what you get for using precision control. :(

I think real plastic surgeons and us "plastic surgeons" have a lot more in common than we'd expect. This reminds me of those movies where the surgeon slowly removes the wrapping from a patients face

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/kaiyao1/evo6wrc/clean.jpg

Voila! Just need to add panel lines, decals, and a good car wax. Clean hands too after using some non toxic hand cleaner.

Unfortunately hte seatbelts I ordered won't be here for another week or two. Also, this kit does not include an extra fifth wheel to put in the back seat, despite including enough decals to do so. Wonder what I'm going to do about that..

freakray
08-25-2002, 01:27 PM
Dan,
The good news is WRC cars don't have a back seat so you don't need to put a spare on it, only Group N rally cars do (Just getting smart on you:D )
Actually, if memory serves me, the spare on this car would be in the trunk, the only time they carry one behind the driver/co-driver too is on the Safari Rally. If you have photos to prove otherwise, than I admit being wrong.....I often am....
Hope you get them seatbelts soon, I am looking forward to seeing the completed car, you even have me working a bit harder on mine now!!;)
Ray

ales

Not so. The spare wheel in sedans is usually "between" the trunk and the rear seat - probably to help weight transfer.

Dan - good work :)

edit: at least that's on a previous generation scoobie. In Evos it seems to be right behind the seats.

auxr8 sent me some great reference photos from Scale Auto mag. he didn't specify which rallies they were from, though, so the photo with the tire in it must be from the Safari rally..

Hey, I said I could be wrong:silly2:
I never paid too much attention to the Lancers, I am a Scooby fan, and I could have told you where the wheel on the Scoob is.....
I don't mind you guys correcting me, since I am willing to learn, sorry for being misleading.....
Another thing, would Tamiya really release a model so incorrect (I admit I have found some discrepancies(sp) on the 2001 Scooby's), but I would imagine they would have the model pretty accurate for the rally it is based on?
Do you think NZ would require multiple spare tires?
I do notice the photos are from a gravel event though....cool:D
I think gravel is the best.

Got the decals put on the body today. This project is going to be put on hold until my seatbelts arrive.

Since this rally took place in New Zealand and p-man's from NZ, the panel lines were done with him in mind. :alien:

Dan,
Why did you put the Carisma decal on the car?
I don't believe Tommi ever drove the Carisma car, I was of the impression that it was Freddie Loix that drove the one with Carisma on the rear quarter?
I know I am prone to being wrong but this is something I feel pretty certain about......
Otherwise, I think the car looks good.

Everything is basically done, I lent my Clear Orange out so I will need to get it back to get the lights done, other than that everything is 99% completed.

Had just enough belt buckles to do the two seats. That would be my only complaint with the S27 set, not enough of certain types of buckles. I like how it includes various seatbelt manufacturer stickers, and the fabric. The belts are actually masking tape painted red as the red fabric included is too wide to fit through the seats.

Hey Daggerlee,

Your EVO VI looks really good!! The suspension is very colourfull indeed, although one finished, you don't see much of it.

A couple of months before I got to know AF, I finished my EVO VI. I left the NZ decals for what they were :finger: and got a sheet from Renaissance to do the Monte Carlo 2000. Being a Belgian, I did Freddy's Carisma. Mine is lower cause of asphalt lay-out. I took some pictures this weekend and got them to the local photoshop. As soon as I have them I scan them and post them, promise
