Setting ignition timing with an aftermarket UDP

Hey all, the ignition timing is off on the Talon and I want to set it right. Well, on vfaq they say to look at the tick mark on the pulley, paint it white and point the light at it. Well, I have and aftermarket pulley so what do I do? Where is the tick mark in relation to everything else so I can just put my own on? Any advice or info?

I haven't looked, but TDC is TDC (0 degrees) and I would think that is where the tick (TDC) should be. So put it at TDC, and make your tick mark on the pulley where 0 degrees is indicated. I could be wrong, I don't have a 1g, but I bet I am right cause a motor is a motor.

Hopefully the PM sent involves something a little more scientific than just painting a line on the top of the pulley :yikes:

There better be a mark cut into it, just highlight that with some whiteout or something. I usually end up using something like my sister's nail polish in some funky color like silver. :icon16:

Setting timing is an exact science, and not something you want to half ass.

If there's no mark cut into the pulley, then options are limited. Either the stock pulley would have to be put back on, or one would have to do what I described. :dunno: It should be really close IMHO, it is on a chevy anyway :icon16: Too bad you can't put some timing tape on there.

I would like to know what brand pulley that is. I've never bought an aftermarket pulley for anything other than a chevy, and it just seems a little shitty there is no timing mark on it.

I would take a second look at it :2cents:

The only way I would do it if there is no mark is with a piston stop and a cam degree wheel. But that's more involved than I care to post about. I think swapping the stocker in temporarily would be the best option.

Also make sure that whatever pulley you use is also a harmonic damper. One particular tuner shop in the BMW world found that non-dampened pulleys increase the frequency of thrust bearing wear and other crank related problems. Like many other CW theories, there is no solid proof, but why risk it?
