I have used ATF to replace my transfer case fluid. Vehicle was binding up and crow hopping in turns. The dealer said that the wrong transfer case fluid was used. It should replace with NV247 lube. The dealership ends up removing my tansfer case, and replacing the progressive clutch and output seal to fix the problem. It costs me $2K.
Would an ATF fluid cause that much damage to my vehicle?

Yes.
2K Big ouch
Transfer cases are not what they used to be.
Always use the fluid the good book calls for.
Did you see a tag on the back of it or read the owners manual or service book on it?

I just want to know how mechanically possible that the ATF fluid could cost me $2K damage. The ATF fluid is only in the Jeep for a couple days and I drove less than 100 miles with it. Thanks for an explanation from anyone.

You done answered your own question.
Progressive clutch or viscious clutch or what ever it is called takes a special fluid.
It has special clutch plates= takes special fluid.
Reg ATF will wipe it out as you have found out the hard way.
Like 2K damage or even more sometimes.
Very Expensive lessen. Or like they say you found out the hard way.
