Thinking about getting rid of the Spyder...

What blasphemy! Sigh, I know.

I just can't afford it anymore: paying insurance, registration, maintenance., and gas for two cars is a real kick in the nuts when you don't really have a real job, and I'm burning out. The GT sucks gas like you wouldnt beleive and the DSM is a money pit as it is. Something's gotta give. I also need money for school now that I finally transfered to UC San Diego.

What do you guys think? I need a break from the car world for a bit and concentrate on school. How much do you folks think I could get for it? It has a brand new fully built 6-bolt crate motor (head and block) with around 3000 miles on it, a big 16G, and a bunch of other goodies. I'm thinking at least $10,000 considering the money I've dumped into this thing, but I doubt the market has any regard for that...

Gimme some feedback, and I may have it listed soon. :frown: I feel like crying...

:crying: NOOOOO!!! Anything but the Shpyder!!! You're a good looking man, sell yourself on the street. I bet you could turn a couple hundred a night. Shit, I would sell myself so you can keep that car. I can hardly bear to think of what some little fuckhead would do to it. I suppose if you gotta you gotta though. I would ask like 16k-18k. That car is gorgeous, if I had money for it, I would absolutely drop it on that car.

Why don't you just store the car for a while? Drop the insurance to non-driving, it costs relatively nothing. That way you don't have to give it up.

who cares, sell it, its your car and you can do with it what you please. So what if someone gets it and beats it, its a turbo car...what do you expect... DSM is by far the worse money pit i've ever encountered.. sell it and buy an SI or just keep the gt. just look at it this way, you sell it, you ahve 10,000$ + cash.... its kinda retarted if you buy a dsm and your a young kid.. number one you work 40- 50 hrs a week and dump every penny into the car and it still diss's ya in the future. I sold my talon, got what i wanted and the kid totaled it 3 days later! thats his damn problem....

Dont worry, if you sell it the hurting only lasts a couple minutes, then you realize you have plenty of extra cash to burn on better things.

I'd buy it in an instant. Ship it out to Chicago and the money will be yours. Seriously. I want it.

Shpyder
07-14-2006, 11:20 AM
The thing is, I can always come back into the DSM world. And no, I'm not giving up my mod status: I'd miss this place too much and you guys are a lot of fun to be around. I love these cars to death, but reality bites: with university just around the corner, I do need some cash, and simply cannot afford to keep the DSM.

The fact is, that I have gone WAY overboard with this car. Somewhere along the lines, I screwed up my priorities. It was my daily driver, and suddenly, I felt uncomfortable driving it every day with all the dough I had dumped into it. And that 6-bolt?! Holy shit folks, I paid SBR $7000 for the entire thing, including the swap kit. I don't even drive that crazy, nor do I race. But I felt that I needed the cammed and ported Stage III head, with the upgraded springs and retainers, etc. Sigh. And all I really needed was a plain $1000 6-bolt. I think it was an ego thing.

Why don't you just store the car for a while? Drop the insurance to non-driving, it costs relatively nothing. That way you don't have to give it up.

I was thinking about that before. Doing a PNO on it and have it sit in the garage. But I do need the money. This is where I wish I would have saved something instead of dumping, literally, every single paycheck into the car. Sigh, but every drive and comment make it worth all the effort. It is bittersweet. I had big plans for it: making it AWD with a diff from a GSX donor, and doing the fuel system and a TRE tranny. I will get this done to another lucky spyder some day, once I'm out of school and earning a bomb. I hope.

ive seen people ask more for less.............alot more

What should I ask for it? I know I would not want less than $10,000, simply because of the brand new motor. Forget the labor and all the other things on it. The car is not flawless, but it is certainly in excellent condition. I am fully aware that I can never get even remotely close the money I have invested in it. But I have to draw the line between it's worth to me, and it's worth as cash.

Also, I wanted to advertise on the forums before anywhere else. It's a DSM, and other people don't realize what that entails. It basically says, "be prepared for expenditure upon ownership". Though the car is running great, I wouldnt want to sell it to someone who does not know that these things are money pits, or to someone who's looking to buy this as a daily driver. I'm not here to rip anyone off, and I just want people to know what they are getting into. I've poured my heart and soul into this car since the past 3 years, every paycheck. And I've tolerated it's breaking down on me here and there without a frown. I'm not so sure a new owner not cognisant of the way these cars run would be so forgiving. In the end, I would want another DSMer to own it.

You're a good looking man, sell yourself on the street. I bet you could turn a couple hundred a night.
I'd love to, but all my MILF's have my schedule all booked.:icon16:

Wow...do I feel like a sell out. My baby...sniffff :crying:

In Canada a car that has less than your car EXCEPT a 60-1 is selling for 25,000. It actually might be worth it to look into to selling over the border. Get about twice your asking price in the states.

defiancy
07-14-2006, 01:14 PM
I think you could get 10,000 for it easy. And you don't have to leave the community really. Once you sell it just pick up a 1g AWD car and do light mods to it. Nothing big, and you can still have a dsm :)

clipsekid99
07-14-2006, 02:42 PM
I second storeing it somewhere without coverage on it.

If not, and you really NEED to sell it, david-b just offered to buy it.

Either way, I feel for you man. Some things are just more important than others. Good luck.

Hmmm, could there be a pattern to the DSM way here? I am dumping a ton of money into mine too and its kinda scary when you really think about it all. :uhoh:

Shpyder
07-14-2006, 04:22 PM
Nah, I don't think I'll ever leave the DSM world. It's in the blood. :p I just need a short break from the tuner scene for a bit. It's such a distraction this thing... I'm busy surfing EBay and DSMTuner classifieds for aftermarket parts, when I really should be doing research or HW on my laptop instead, lol.

david-b, I currently have a local tow truck driver that's really interested in the car. He actually towed my car once (yes, ofcourse, that's where all DSMs like to "chill" and "hang-out", their favorite spot: on the flat bed of a tow truck, lmao). He offered $12,000 cash for it. He's coming to take a look at it this Tuesday, let's see where that goes. I can't beleive I'm actually selling it... it's like I'm breaking up with my girlfriend of 16 years or something. I will post a formal ad in the classifieds if it doesnt sell locally, or put it up on EBay.

Blackcrow64, it's well worth the money; every time I drive my Spyder, it is the ultimate stress release. I feel on top of the world in that car. The sound of the turbo spooling, the BOV squeeling, the growl from the cams and the exhaust...it's a thrill that never gets old for me. The very knowledge of having a fully built 6-bolt beast under that vented hood, regardless of the fact that the vehicle is no where near it's potential at present, is satisfying enough. It's funny to see people back off once they hear the turbo. And I don't even street race. I started out building it as a cruiser, and like I said, priorities priorities...it ended up an incomplete drag car with that silly overdone motor that I absolutely did not need. But every time someone on the freeway gives me a shiteatin' grin with a thumbs up, it makes every single penny and and every single second I spent on this car worth it. Sigh... I can't wait to graduate and finally blow like $40,000 on a DSM. YesI'mretarded. :icon16::icon16::icon16:

It will be a shame to see the spyder go to a new home... :( We all put so much time and effort into our cars, I think thats what makes us get so close to them. Heck, I know I probably have a few months worth of working time on it since I've bought it... You should reconsider and sell the gt instead man. Its not even turbocharged. lol :p

Thor06
07-14-2006, 04:47 PM
Yeah, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. I would say hold out, I dont think you'd have any trouble getting 15 grand for it. But then you may not and 12 grand is a lot of money. Kinda sucks when you realize you have gone overboard doesnt it. I have the same feeling for mine right now, but obviously not to your degree.

Like you said, that's in Canada, but there is an exchange rate which makes that "twice" as much, even less in American.

1cad = usd 0.887311 *20,000 = 17750 STILL NOT WORTH IT? and thats 20, 000 he could get more here.
Maybe you should learn the exchange rates before you say something like that. Not to mention NO SALES TAX across the border.

But, I think you should take the insurance off of it and cover it up and stick it in the garage. The car's not even mine and I'd still be sick if you sold it. I KNOW you could get 10k for it, probably atleast 15k for it. I think you should spend some time with the car....do a little more driving in it, maybe take a long trip, and really think about if it would be worth it to sell it. Theres no way you are going to get out of it what you have in it, so you might as well just keep it. I have far less put into my Spyder...and if it ever came down to me not being able to drive it, it would sit in my backyard under a cover and under the shelter. But man its your call, I just hope you don't rush into anything then sell it, and never forgive yourself.

BTW, if you have to sell it, first take off the 16g, the coilovers, the short throw, and the gauges, and sell them to me.

First off all he lives in San Diego, why would he take his car to Canada to sell it?

Last I remember which was a while ago the exchange rate was $1.46 Canadian is $1 American. Even though that was a while ago I'm sure it hasn't changed all that much, besides who the fuck is going to travel from the US to Canada to sell there car?

And learn how not to be a dick.:smooch:

well it really sux that you are selling it. PLEASE find it a good home, it is one of the best looking spyders out there.

if you want to trade it for my GSX i'll let ya have it, the GSX is much more practical and you could sell the GT and enjoy 4 doors a turbbooo

oh yeah, did i mention that you could garage it? like at my house. shoot, i'll give you 50$ a month to let me drive it around... (on occasion).

:D sound good? i hope you make a good decision for yourself, and though it is difficult seeing your paychecks fall into someone else's hands remember that though it is difficult, it may be the best thing. shoot, i may even kno a guy here in missouri that would want it for a shell. meaning, he's already got the baddest spyder i've ever seen and in that body it would be ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!

AbsoluteGTR
07-15-2006, 01:11 AM
Damn Sphyder, I am sure the decision is going to be a very hard one....

Just do what you have to do and do it with no regrets.

Take into consideration, the fact that you can sell the GT, store the spyder and maybe buy a real fuel-efficient, trusty car....yes I am sorry...a honda. I know a "honduh" would be like betrayal but school is way more important and down the road would be well worth, when you can put another $50K into it. lol

Good luck

I'm sure you've worked on plenty of cars and you know what your doing, but I just can't see someone being so encouraging to someone to sell the car that they worked so hard on. I'm sure you sold all those corvettes without even feeling the slightest bit regret (I know, I have bought a few cars and turned around and sold them myself without even caring about the cars) but I could never see myself selling my car. IDK, I guess thats just the difference between me and everyone else. And no my Mommy or Daddy didn't buy me anything either. My Grandma bought me my car, lol. But when it comes to everything else like tires, oil, anything to deal with maintainence, anything that breaks and any aftermarket parts it comes out of my pocket.
