I need to change the brakes and rotors for my friend's Elantra, she can't afford to have it professionally done. From what I have heard the rotors in particular are difficult to change... Anyone have any tips for changing either? I have limited mechanical knowledge but a decent amount of common sense, if you could steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

Actually, the rotors are pretty easy to change on the '04. Earlier models had a press on rotor, which were quite a pain. Once you get the caliper off, the rotor should just slide off the hub unless it's rusted to it, which is possible. If that's the case, a hammer will take care of it. Other than that, it should go smooth if you have some mechanical knowledge. I would recommend getting at least the pads from the dealer. I see time and time again aftermarket pads squeeking on Hyundais. I can get you a deal on them, but I'm leaving on a trip to Korea for Hyundai tomorrow, and won't be back until next week. At that time I can look into how much I can get them to you for.

Yes brakes are a snap on the XD (01-03) models and up. I too recommend Hyundai OEM pads. I had aftermarket pads on my car for a very short time. They weren't made right and rattled around in the caliper housing. I know people are buying the EBC Greenstuff pads too, but not unless you've upgraded to good cross-drilled rotors.

Forget the Cross Drilled Rotors unkess you are profiling (the Porsche Cup drivers remove the Cross Drilled when they race). I like the PBR-AXXIS pads (Deluxe or Metal Master) they are inexpensive and work well on my 1988 BMW 750il.
