At one point I had asked whether or not Chrysler was going to put out a flash update to give the WJ RFEs the same tow capability instead of just eliminating the overdrive, and people thought no, but didn't know for sure. Has anyone heard whether or not it is possible to update the RFE to have a tow mode instead of just overdrive off?
thanks,
Paul

its not possible. I work at aamco transmission. If you tow with those it had better be with the o/d off and with an auxillary cooler otherwise you will be seeing me shortly!

Angelou,
Are you saying the 454 is not tow worthy? It is the same tranny used on the new Jeeps with a tow mode in the tranny from what I understand. That tranny is used on the 4.7 and on the Hemi

I don't know of any flashes for tow modes. the only major flash i know of adds the 5th gear ratio to 99-01 WJs. as long as you are cruising at highway speeds without a lot of uphill towing, O/D on is fine...
also, yes it is tow worthy. the 545RFE is a great transmission. i know GCs that are used as tow vehicles and have at least 4000 lbs behind them almost all the time and never had any transmission problems. If you're going to tow a lot a shift kit would be recommended. transgo makes a few different kits(45RFE-HD2 recommended). otherwise, at least change your fluid more often than the 30,000mi intervals (depending on how much you are towing). transmission fluid oxidizes much faster as the fluid temperature increases so a transmission temperature guage would be helpful as well. And make sure to use real mopar ATF+4

Just for comparison,a 2006 hemi ram 3500 is rated to tow over 10,000 lbs. with-you guessed it a 545rfe.that is with a 4.10 rear end but still,it's the same trans.like msrjeep says, its a great trans
