Dear Experts,
Your help would be VERY much appreciated!!
I have a Chrysler Concorde 1998 (2.7 L, 100,000 miles). Early in the morning, when it’s relatively cool and humid outside (e.g. having dew on the car which is very common in Toronto area), when I start my car the generator belt makes squeaking noises (at around 600-700 rpm). As soon as I accelerate (over 1200 rpm) the noise disappears. However, when idling at intersection, you can hear the noise again. After 5-7 miles the noise seems to disappear completely, even while idling. On hot and dry days I’ve never had that type of problem. When I talked to a mechanic I have confidence to, I was told that the belt is in good condition and no replacement is needed. And that the reason should be purely environmental – a combination of humidity and drop in temperature. According to him, if there were a problem with belt’s tension, the noise would (at least) continue when accelerating, or getting even worse. At the same time, belt tension in Chrysler Concorde is adjusted automatically.
What are your opinions? Is that explanation correct and should I just continue driving and enjoying my car?
Many thanks in advance for your help. I appreciate it VERY-VERY much!!
If you could not even post your reply on the forum but even send it to me via email (using that function on your left) I’d be completely happy…
All the best,

To my knowlege the Sepentine belt which runs your Altenator is not auto adjusted. The timing belt has an auto tensioner, but it can not squeal. The Serpentine Belt adjuster is behind the small pulley left of the Altenator when facing the the car. If it squeals while in Neutral and you give it some gas, then it needs to be tightened.. if not then stop by your local auto supply and ask for Belt dressing.. it's an aerosol spray that will eliminate belt squeal.
