Jaguar S-Type

This is my Maisto Jaguar S-Type. Had it for four years and it's showing age. I realized today that there are scratches and hicks here and there, a cracked windshield and the grille is cracked and splitted and loose from the hinges. I also forgot that I lost a taillight from a vacuum accident.

The only mod I did on the car is lowering it. That's about it and boring out the exhaust. If you don't know, Maisto exhausts aren't bored out. It's covered, so I usually either drill or bore it out to give it a realistic effect. :grinyes:

Other than that, you can see my process in restoring it. Gonna repaint it and replace some parts. It'll be a slow process and I'll post it up here as the progress goes by. I just started sanding off the paint starting with the trunk area.

first of all why are you showing us the pics in balck and white? 2nd of all why do you want to restore this? if you replace the parts that means that you'll have to buy another brand new car just for those parts (unless if you have the donor car in stock)

:D I'm restoring it because the paint's all chipped off and scratched. I'm gonna try to find a old damaged S-Type for parts. The picture are in antique color because it's the best resolution my phone camera can take. The normal color mode gives off too much glare. Until I get a digi, this is all I can offer. :(

That looks like a good project car, first of all you can easily get wheels off any other Maisto car , second of all all the parts come straight off the car pretty easily.
This might be a pretty cool car when it's finished!

I might make a suggestion that would save you some time, elbow grease, profanity and come out with a better overall job in the end. Take the car apart down to the basics and strip the metal with Kleen-Strip Aircraft remover. If you live in the USA you can get a spray can at any "WallyWorld" auto section or for that matter any auto parts store worth its salt for about $5.00 a can. Being that its metallic silver or blue it may be harder to come off and may still require some sanding. But be assured it won't be nearly the pain in the butt that just straight sanding will be. Afterwards prime it and paint it what ever color your heart desires. I use Krylon Gray Primer and if I use enamel (my other choice being fingernail polish NEVER acrylic) I usually bake it in the oven at 400 degrees F about 80 seconds. Then in a couple of days clear coat it with Krylon Triple Clear Glaze. Granted I only work on 1/64 and 1/43 but the principle's the same.

Yeah, I'll put that aside for now and replace it when the time comes. For now, I already sanded down the paint to it's original aluminum metal.

I'm gonna prime it gray for now and paint it to dark blue (navy)

From a beige gold to dark blue is a pretty nice color for this car. :) Pictures will come soon.

:) Sorry, the interior is painted black. I want it to look more VIP. Rims are still debateable, and I'm trying to figure out where I want the chromes. I'll have pictures coming soon, along with my new project. I'm working on two cars at the same time so it's taking some time.

Here's the second coating of the new paint. :)

Edit: I've noticed that there are some splotches and droplets in some areas, so reluctantly, I have to scrape the paint off and resand the whole thing again and start from scratch. *sigh* :banghead:

Anyways, I will have to be careful again, I might have to dunk this whole thing in a pool of paint thinner overnight. Scrape some of the layers off and sand the rest of it off. :eek7::cya:

I'll keep you guys posted.

How long does it take to sand that car down to the metal? Is the any paint left on it, at all, when your done?

I ain't got stock in this company or nothin'. But I can Kleen-Strip that thing in 15 minutes and there won't be an extra scratch on the metal nor will any detail in the casting be dulled. And All the paint will be gone.

Unless you just get a kick out of sanding.

It took me two hours. Sanding it down with 100 count paper, than to 320 count and then to 600 to smooth out the area even more. After that I prime it gray and wait for a day to dry to see any bubbles or uneven areas.

Now that I'm pissed I missed up, I dunked it in a bucket of paint thinner overnight and the paint eventually just slothes off.

I take it your outside the USA? If so I don't know the equivilant of Kleen-Strip. But it desolves every paint I've ever put it on in 5 miniutes and leaves NO trace. The exception being the HW's silver blue and their silver. Tough stuff indeed. It does hoxever raise the paint to allow it to be cleaned off with Scoth-Brite and it does take several applications to get all of it. ET of 15 minutes. I would always suggest stripping over sanding as no casting lines are disturbed.

Here it is. I'm finally done. Just need to coat once more and replace the grill and find a taillight and it should be a done deal. :)

So, what do you guys think of the new paint?
