flywheel bad spot

Starter gear doesn't fully engage flywheel . Intermittent and after a couple tries it will catch a tooth and turn over the engine. $212.00 for new flywheel and 6-7 hours labour
60K miles on automatic 97 Camry.
This should not wear a bad spot.. My 92 Camry has 170K miles and all is good.
Any others experience this?
